Fullerians Vets 68 Ampthill 28
Fullers Vets kick off season in style with 10 try feast.
The older statesman of Fullerians greased their boots and had a rare home game against a sporting Ampthill team. In glorious sunshine and well refereed made for a running game of rugby (well as much as vets can be at their age).
Fullers started the brighter with their Australian international Bill Calcraft making head rows into the Ampthill defence. He was ably supported by new recruit Andrew Craig, a man mountain and ex NSW Waratahs second row. Both guys punched big holes in the visitors defence which left for generous overlaps for the backs to exploit. Debutant Ed Clarke went over for his first of a brace of tries as did fly half Simon Fox.
Lovely off the top ball from the line out saw winger Kev Sorkin also go over under the posts after a simple first phase move found the necessary gap for Sorkin to squeeze through.
Wayward defending from the Fullers defence allowed Ampthill back in the game. Fullers were also caught napping as the big Ampthill pack put the pressure on at scrum time to nick the ball and crash over.
Fullers kept to their strengths to keep the ball alive with some lovely inter passing between forwards and backs and every time the visitors scored, Fullers score twice just to make sure.
The move of the match was when Fullers ran from their own 22 (a long way for Vets) and with great continuity and lines of running saw Simon Fox going for the line to score his hat trick. He realised he wouldn’t make it (or was it jug avoidance?) he then passed to Chairman Brind who crashed over for the score.
“Vets games are always enjoyable and Ampthill played with Great Spirit and we will see them for our return fixture later in the year. We look forward to the rest of the season and get as many old timers out playing as possible.” commented skipper Clyve Hancock.
