Miners dig in to win epic derby

Garforth v Farsley games (perhaps with the exception of last summers friendly) often live up to the billing and this one certainly did.
Although it was a pre-season, the match had all the edge you'd expect from a local derby. There was no holding back and a few early feisty challenges helped to set the tone.

Curtly Martin Wyatt treated the Miners to a dream start on seven minutes when, completely unmarked, he stroked the ball home following some crisp Garforth play from a throw-in.
The Garforth forwards looked the most likely to add another until Farsley earned a corner on the left. Aiden Savourys' header kept the ball alive for Lewis Morgan to nod home from six yards.

A hotly contested free-kick on the edge of Garforths' box gave Farsley the chance to go into the lead and after a short discussion over the taker, it was Savoury that clipped a sweet ball past the rooted Hunter.

Morgans' panicked clearance gave Garforth a corner on the stroke of half time, which Wyatt rose to meet and power beyond one-time Town keeper, Tom Taylor. The teams went in level at two each.

Garforth were again quicker out of the blocks after the break. Jay Davis had only been on the pitch four minutes when he avoided two challenges in the box, allowing him to drill Garforth back into the lead.
Tawanda Rupere missed a glaring chance to put Farsley to the sword just one minute later, although credit to Taylor for getting a faint touch, steering the ball wide.

The visitors were rocking, but held on to re-group and carve out a chance for former Eccleshill United star Marcus Edwards. Ross Daleys' pass was fired at him, but Edwards showed an incredible touch followed by a deft lob over Garforths' skyscraping keeper. The celebration was typically pumped up.

The supporters had already got their moneys' worth, but there was no doubt that more was to come.
Again the home side put the side two divisions above them on the rack. Marauding full back Andy Hawksworth came close, followed by Davis, Jassim Alali and Dominic Hackney.
Edwards and Priestley had efforts for Farsley as dusk descended.
Davis looked like he'd blown Garforths' last chance when he tried to lob Taylor instead of smash the ball home, but the forward showed great determination, slide tackling a defender and feeding Hackney, who in turn fed Luke Managhan for a calm finish that led to jubilous scenes around the ground.
Just a friendly? This may as well have been a cup game!

Garforth put in a performance that was worthy of the shirt and put Saturdays' result firmly in the past.
