Mistakes can lead to goals and goals can change games- if the Garforth youngsters weren't aware of this fact before the game they certainly were by half time of this competitive match. Garforth were comfortable for the first 17 minutes and could easily have been one goal to the good when Cuttle pulled back a lovely pass to the unmarked Prince after 10 minutes but he got under his first time shot and the ball sailed over the bar. On 17 minutes a poor Colley pass in his own half was telegraphed by the opposition followed some 5 minutes later by a loose Evans pass being pounced upon by them. Both mistakes were clinically punished by Stalybridge. 2-0 to them after 20 minutes. Stalybridge soon added a third and the Garforth youngsters were really under the cosh at this stage . A goal for Garforth on 30 minutes changed the complexion of the game and for the next 15 minutes up to half time Garforth started to get on top again. The Garforth goal was scored by Cuttle - a floated free kick by Devlin to the far post was headed back across the box by Diggle. The opposition keeper dropped the ball allowing Cuttle to volley it in. 3-1 to them at half time. The next goal would be crucial and it almost fell to Garforth just a few minutes into the second half when a lovely Fletcher pass gave Prince a one on one with the keeper but the latter pulled off a good save. Minutes later Stalybridge were awarded a dubious penalty - there didn't seem to be much contact from Diggle on the opposition player. 4-1 to Stalybridge. Not much in the game for the last 40 minutes or with so Stalybridge scoring an individual goal after a player dribble and Garforth responding with a nice Reynolds finish from a lovely switched pass by Prince. At the final whistle the Garforth youngsters were perhaps reflecting on the fact that they had matched Stalybridge in many respects. Take out the 2 big lapses of player concentration and Garforth would have been very close to taking down a team operating from 2 divisions above them.A big effort - well done to them.
