Whitkirk Wanderers 1 Garforth 2
Miners grind out a win
Goals from Mitch Hamilton and Lee Turner gave Town a 2-1 victory over a resilient Whitkirk in a scrappy encounter at the Whitkirk Sports & Social Club.
Hamilton came close to opening the scoring in the 12th minute when his long range effort almost caught out the Wanderers keeper who managed to divert the ball away from goal. Some good play between new signing Jack Lazenby and Turner ended in the latter seeing a good effort tipped over the bar on 17 mins, and moments later Luke Kitson almost scored a "worldie" when his inswinging corner came off the crossbar.
The home side - featuring ex-Town players Glen Wood and Dan Sheriffe - gradually came into the game, which itself became more physical as Town allowed themselves to be rattled by some rough challenges. On 22 mins Whitkirk's no 11 put a good effort just wide, before Paul Hagreen saved at the feet of their no. 9 when supplied by number 15's clever pass.
On 51 mins Garforth had the lead when Oliver Maude's free kick found its way to Hamilton who steered home at close range. Hamilton nearly had his second four mins later when his looping header was tipped over the bar. On 60 mins however Wanderers levelled the scores when James Dyson came in from the right, and despite the attention of three Town defenders, bundled the ball into the net. The spirited hosts' tails went up, promising a difficult end to the game for the Miners but in the end Hagreen wasn't really tested.
New signing Regan Fish had a low shot saved on 76 mins, before his teammate Turner gave us our third pre-season win five mins from time when he made his way down the left and scored with an excellent curling finish across the keeper.
