Thackley 3 Garforth 1
Clinical Dennyboys complete the double.
It was an entertaining game in which Garforth had most of the possession, but clinical Thackley showed the finishing touches we were lacking to condemn us to a fourth successive defeat.
Tim Robertson was the first man to attempt a shot on goal when he beat two men and had a low effort saved by Dayle Coleing in the Thackley goal. Ryan Farrell then went close for the home side when his 20 yard drive was held by Tom Osborne.
Sadly for the sixth game in a row it was Town who conceded first, on 16 mins a cross from the left was helped on by Joe Brown to captain Pat McGuire who converted into the bottom corner to put his side ahead.
The Miners tried to respond but on breaks forward struggled initially to beat the Dennyboys' offside trap. Spencer Lund hit the side netting after being supplied by Ashley Preece and Danny Harris hit the top of the crossbar directly from a corner. An excellent delivery by Robertson on 23 mins deserved a goal, but Mark Simpson's header was held by Coleing. Two mins later Farrell came inches away from making it 2-0 when he shot just wide from 20 yards. A better chance followed for the midfielder moments later when Tom Dugdale found him at the back post but shot wide again. Dugdale then came close himself with a powerful deflected effort which Osborne managed to divert wide.
Town struggled at times to handle Thackley's pace going forward and the pressure paid off on 31 mins when a long ball found McGuire on the right who finished well off the far post with Osborne stranded. Towards half time the Garforth stopper made a couple of saves to keep the deficit down, firstly from McGuire's free kick and then an inswinging corner from Dugdale. Three mins from half time however we pulled one back when Harris delivered to Lund at the far post who found the net with a great finish from a narrow angle.
On 61 mins Garforth were perhaps unlucky not to equalize when Lund forced a save from Coleing, the loose ball falling to Greg Kidd who was denied a second goal in as many games by a deflection over the bar. Somewhat against the run of play, Thackley then stormed down the other end to make it 3-1 on 64 mins, Farrell making a run down the left and picking out Dugdale at the far post who smashed home.
Harris wasn't far off on 71 mins when firing just over from 30 yards after a defensive error. Osborne was called into action again around the 77 minute mark, making saves from Ben Cohen and Farrell, and in an end-to-end spell Coleing saved from George Conway. Time was running out for a comeback; Town had their chances but just couldn't take them. Three of out of the four fell Preece's way, firstly heading just wide Mick Jones' delivery to the far post, then shooting just wide after being set up by sub Oliver Smith, and finally a good strike from 30 yards which Coleing tipped over the bar. The Thackley stopper then denied Jack McCarthy at close range from Harris' corner.
A much better attacking performance from the Miners who are not getting the rub of the green at the minute, but in a competitive division need to make the most of spells on top if we're to start picking up points before the end of the season.
