Garstang make the long trip to New Brighton tomorrow in the second round of league games
Last week Garstang faced a fairly familiar for in Eccles, even though they hadn’t played in nearly a decade. However, this season is going to be a season of firsts as we come up against opposition for the first time.
On Saturday the First XV make the long trip to New Brighton on the Wirral Peninsula. New Brighton are a club with a rich history and indeed our Honorary Club President Alan Cavanagh made his Fylde debut against them as a callow seventeen year old in 1956.
In the modern league era New Brighton have operated at a very high level and they were playing in the National Leagues at Level Four as recently as 2006. In fact, in the previous season they finished above our esteemed neighbours Fylde in the league.
For the past decade or so they have mainly operated at Level Six in North One/Two West but, similarly to Eccles, they have suffered back to back relegations to leave them at Level Eight for maybe the first time ever.
There will be a coach to the game which will leave the club at 11:30 which will also have a core group of our Veterans team on board including the previously mentioned Mr Cavanagh who will be taking a wistful trip down memory lane.
Elsewhere, Aspull and Marple, who both opened their campaign with impressive wins to nil, play each other in a game which will be an interesting guage of the strength of the respective teams. Orrell and Birchfield both claimed narrow wins in week one and they face each other in another interesting match-up.
Full fixtures in the league are listed below:
Aspull vs Marple
Birchfield vs Orrell
Congleton vs Oswestry
Eccles vs Port Sunlight
New Brighton vs Garstang
