With bad weather ruling that the pitch at Gateshead International Stadium was unplayable, Cramlington gained home field advantage in this Junior Cup Final. With an entertaining end to end Under 14s final taking place immediately before, it was hoped this game would be equally as entertaining. Coming in to the game off the back of a 66-6 win over Durham Tigers in their Semi Final and currently sat top of the league after suffering only one defeat all season, Cramlington Rockets came into this game as strong favourites and lived up to their billing right from the off. Storm Coach Adam Houston knew that his boys would be up against a bigger stronger side but still had high hopes for his young squad.

Boosted by the confidence of having Huddersfield Giants scholarship duo Callum Chick and Daniel Marshall available, Rockets Head Coach Jordan Robinson was able to select a full-strength team and was rewarded accordingly. Rockets were the first to open the scoring when strong defence from the Cramlington pack forced an error near the Storm line which allowed Lewis Thompson to crash over from close range and make sure the error went punished. The trusty boot of Ben Senior extended their lead with the first of 6 goals on the day from 8 attempts.
Storm’s defence seemed a little shell shocked by the prompt reward that Rockets gained and were caught cold moments later when Jack Williams crossed out wide, with Senior again adding the extras. Callum Chick, not wanting to be outdone by his front row partner Thomson was next on the score sheet when he received a short ball from Senior to bash his way over leaving Senior the easy conversion. Rockets continued their pattern of scoring from every set when Williams touched down for his second moments later, Senior’s conversion attempt falling wide this time.

Storm was looking down the barrel of a gun at 22-0 down after just over 10 minutes and they had only touched the ball once! Led by some tough tackling from Matthew Whitfield and their best on the day Jack Munro, they managed to halt the Rockets on their next set saw them trade possession and show that they could match the bigger Rockets pack. After coming close on a number of occasions but narrowly failing to convert their chances, Storm were unlucky to concede another try when Dan Marshall crossed against the run of play just on the stroke of half time after Storm had been camped on the Cramlington line.
Storm started the second half brightest and with skipper James Cooney leading a tireless assault on the Rockets line it was Liam O’Halleron who breached the Rockets defence. A strong break by John Cain before he was stopped by the recovering Cramlington defence before O’Halleron showed his awareness from the resulting play the ball. His quick thinking saw him make the most of an unguarded short side to sneak down the line and score in the corner. Jack Hill’s conversion attempt falling just across the front of the posts.

Storm’s hopes were short lived however as Cramlington hit back after some lacklustre defending allowed Stephen Bintcliffe to streak clear to score and Senior converted before Marshall completed his hat trick with a quick-fire brace which Senior converted. Rockets had the final say when Callum Chick scored his 2nd of the day but Senior was unable to convert.
