York RFC
Sat 17 Feb 14:15 - Cup Full time

WE DEFINITELY CAME SECOND!

Beaten by a cracking side.

With a full team we would have had a hard time against York but with a few cry offs for various reasons and the younguns off to Barcelona it was going to be a hard day at the office.
And so it was. York were a big side with several guys who were big, strong and skilful to boot!
York got straight onto the front foot and scored a try about every five minutes to make the half time score 0-27. Gateshead didn’t play particularly badly but when we got the ball and looked promising on a few occasions we managed to give it away by knocking on or some other mistake.
So second half starts and we gather the ball through Scott who slips the ball to David Tate who makes a promising break only for an interception and they scored. From the kick off David Tate did a cracking kick which dropped just over the 10 metre line and ripe for a catch. Unfortunately our lads were admiring as we were on the bank and York caught it and legged it up the pitch and scored.
So this is the way it was. Our lads never gave up and showed great spirit. Corey Blacklock came on and did well and Jeremy Seront also came on and nearly sored after taking a magnificent take way above his head. The final say was to Gateshead with a try for Alun Barlow. Final score 5-81. Ouch!
Still a lot of good things came out of the game. Good spirit and never say die attitude. Surrey had a huge game against some big guys. Conner Anderson got stuck in as well and the rest never gave in.
The game was reffed by a young chap from Edinburgh who was fit and did well.. Now I watch rugby at all levels and I am sure the majority of refs really don’t know much about scrum play but they give the odd penalty to keep boxes ticked. York pushed the Gateshead pack back at a rate of knots and the ref gave a penalty against Gateshead for our prop being at the wrong angle. Now I am sure he was at the wrong angle like looking at his breakfast from the view up his rear end but I am sure he would rather not have been in that position and it was certainly not voluntary or on purpose! But there you go.
The game was played in a good spirit and York didn’t take the mickey either. So we’ve all been there having had a good howking. It doesn’t do you any harm as long as we learn from it and do our best to reverse that score on someone in the not too distant future!
