WE’VE BEATEN THE BOGEY!
Last gap bonus point victory.
Team as selected with new boy Sam Hill making his debut at 9 with David Tate at 10 as Scott was injured & Matty Banning in the centre.
It was a fine day up at Consett apart from when it P’d down for 20 minutes! Consett’s pitch was looking good and the home team went onto the offensive straight away. However they had two hamstrung players within the first few minutes! Gateshead got a scrum about 10 meters out and won the strike but it rebounded and Consett picked up and scored as the Gateshead back row defence was slow to react. 0-7.
Consett lost their 2nd row with a torn hamstring. Gateshead battled away manfully but were unable to get much territory really and when they did took some wrong options. After 25 minutes the Consett 10 made a break that resulted in another try to make it 0-12 but that was the end of him as he was the other hamstrung player.
The Gateshead defence misread a kick and only a try saving tackle from Adam Ridley saved the day. Approaching half time Gateshead had a defensive scrum and won the ball but it came out the side and were again slow to react and their 9 picked it up and scored. 0-19.
Thankfully Gateshead got some continued possession and launched a good attack and Chris Owen finished off a good attack converted well by David Tate to make the half time score 7-19.
I mentioned at half time that if we were to come back we needed to see a score soon in the second half and so we did but from them. A good cross field kick was misjudged and their winger caught it and fed a scoring pass to make it 7-26
Gateshead came straight back and launched a series of attacks. So was this Gateshead back in the game? Yes it was. Confidence grew and the Gateshead scrum was looking strong and had the Consett pack under pressure. Then a driving lineout was Mark Bentham score and David Tate convert 14-26. Continued pressure saw Sam Hill make a break and he fed Alex Surrey who scored. This time the conversion hit the post. 19-26.
Consett were also looking to move the ball about but the Gateshead defence was good. In midfield their 8 picked up but was tackled well by Martin Pluskal who by this time was at 8 as Matty Cooper was off and Dan Lambert in the second row. The ball went loose and Martin hacked ahead. It was hoofed on again and Nathan Turner picked it up and did well to break a couple of tackles to score. David Tate hit the other post this time! 24-26. Touch line humour decreed that he had been taking kicking lessons from his Uncle Tom rather than from his dad!
Consett regrouped and got back on the attack and Gateshead gave away a series of penalties and they kicked one to make it 24-29. Was this the end?
No it wasn’t as Gateshead launched another attack. We were well into injury time and Gateshead got a scrum about 30 metres out. Martin Pluskal picked up and made good ground. The ball was recycled and Sam Hill fed David Tate. Consett had been used to David feeding his backs all game and were rushing in defence to cover. This time David stepped back inside and was off and a mean turn of pace (not from Uncle Tom!) saw him score a superb try under the posts. 29-29.
The Conversion was needed to win the game and despite being a tad nervous completed the job to win the game 29-31.
Both teams looked to play expansive rugby and Gateshead’s fitness once again proved to be crucial. The scrum did well and the support work was excellent. As usual a few points to note such as the scrum defence need tightening up but I am not going to complain after such a spirited comeback.
Matty Cooper did well with his tackling and ball winning until injury forced him off. Akex Surrey again got through an enormous amount of work as did Martin Pluskal who did well from the back of the scrum when he shifted to 8. Young Dan Lambert did well when he came on and didn’t look out of place in the 1st team. Tom McGowan once again continues to do well in the boiler house. Harry Grey took a few pictures and one of Tom reaching high into the sky for a lineout ball shows how well he is doing. Any truth in the rumour that he already has a huge copy of that on his bedroom wall??
Well done lads you continue to put us old farts through the mill but it makes for an exciting time. Stockton at home next week.
