FIRST TEAM A HEALTH RISK TO SPECTATORS!!
Another Roller Coaster ride for the spectators.
Team as selected. Although there were a number of cry offs pre selection. Scott is still injured and the rest not available. From past ranting everyone knows my feelings about holidays in season. However we are amateurs so nowt more to be said!
Stockton looked like they were up for it and started In an aggressive fashion. Gateshead as last week made mistakes from then off and after 5 minutes a driving line out saw Stockton take first blood 0-5. Five minutes later the ref missed a knock on by the Stockton 9 at the base of a ruck but they took advantage of some for once slack tackling to score their second, converted 0-12.
Gateshead started to get into the game and a few good passages of play initially came to nothing then a line out on their 10 metre line saw Martin Pluskal
take a good ball, fed straight out and some excellent back play saw Nathan Turner
sent away for a cracking try, converted by Johnny Foster 7-12. The Gateshead scrum was looking good and on one Stockton put in Gateshead pushed them back and it wheeled and the ref deemed it illegal and gave Stockton a penalty. Very harsh indeed but in the spirit of consistency he did the reverse later and that was harsh too!
As is Gateshead’s nature we cocked up the kick off and Stockton regained possession and an outrageous dummy was bought by all for a good try for Stockton, converted to make the half time score 7-19.
No doubt harsh words were said at half time and Gateshead came out with a renewed vigour but as last week Stockton got the first score from a driving line out, converted 7-26. Exactly the same score as at the same time last week!
Gateshead straight back onto the attack and pressure on their scrum ball saw them scramble the ball back over their own line and Johnny Foster beat the defence to score. 12-26. Did we dare hope??
A few minutes later another good backs move saw Matty Banning
race away and pass back inside to David Tate
for a try, 17-20. This was followed by a penalty by Johnny Foster, 20-26.
Stockton were tiring but did get back into it and a couple of close calls were only kept out by good Gateshead defence. Nathan Turner
was spoken to by the ref after offering the ref some words of advice which the ref politely gave back!
30 minutes gone and another patch of good support work saw David Tate
get his second and converted by Johnny Foster, 27-26. 35 minutes, Conner Anderson
on for Adam Ridley
gave his support to take a scoring pass again converted by Johnny Foster to make it 34-26. This meant Stockton had to score twice. Surely not in the time left!
They did get one scored by their sub to make it 34-31. Surely the end but no the ball was kicked off. Tom Tate was reaching for the oxygen by now! Couple of minutes and game over. Another remarkable come back! Is it any wonder that the Gateshead spectators are all plonkies?
If you were a neutral you were treated to a cracking game of rugby played by two sides who want to play. The banter was good on the touchline between the two sides and all done in good spirit.
So who was? Martin Pluskal
had a great game and was awarded MOM. The forwards did well in the scrummage and eventually in the line outs. The forwards bearing in mind there were changes in selection and then several changes in the pack through injury saw Johnny Thandi
play in the 2nd row. Dan Lambert
did some good work and Charlie Ladds
put himself about as well. Tim Clinton
continued his learning when he came on.
made some sniping breaks and did well. It was good to see Johnny Foster back. He won’t mind me saying he was a bit ring rusty! Sublime at times and at others quite amusing!!
Here’s a quote of when you say something and later regret it. When it was 7-26 and there was a break in the play one of the Stockton guys was having a chat with David Tate
and he said: ‘ I hear you are known as the comeback kings! Why is that then?’.
So another 5 point win. One thing is for sure that if we give Barney 26 points start next week we won’t get away with it. Happy days!
