Basic errors are costly!
Report by Tom Tate
When I left selection on Tuesday I was confident the selected side would be more than capable of giving Barnard Castle a good game
Sadly a raft of cry offs were going to make life difficult all afternoon
Pluskal off with a nasty shaving cut Lambert out with a sore shoulder and Foster out with a virus.
Then I get a phone call from our usual scribe to inform me that the club's private jet had not arrived at the club's private villa in time to get him back for the game
We had one plus point in that Alex Surrey
was back for his first game since October
From the start it was evident that the home side were up for it and their big strong pack dominated the whole game. In truth we made it easy for them by making some basic errors which gave the ball back to them and they made us pay with tries coming at regular intervals and the half time score was 25-0
Barnard Castle scored first in the second half and the Gateshead support were fearing an avalanche.
However that they didn't was a testament to a gutsy performance by Gateshead. We scored 2 tries from Nathan Turner
and David Tate
and should have had a 3rd when Lewis Carr making a return to 1st team rugby after a number of years had a Ben Kay moment and dropped the ball with the line at his mercy. In the end Castle got another couple of tries to make the final score 44-10.
Who did well for us Ross Craig
was our MOM and our two students Charlie and James stood up well for their first games since November.
A special mention also must go to Surrey who managed to last the whole game except for a undeserved yellow card which seemed to please the home players immensely given the amount of clapping and cheering that went on. This is a unendearing trait and was totally unnecessary and completely unsportsmanlike
The players and coaches would also like to thank our large travelling support who backed the players all game
The bus journey home lasted two minutes until Graeme found he had left his wallet in the clubhouse and we had to wait 30mins until he found it.
First home game of the year next week against Ponteland and we will need to be at our best to beat them
