CAN'T GIVE AWAY TRIES
Mistakes prove costly
Normal service resumed with yours truly. Anyway the deputy scribe is away spending his ill-gotten gains with the rest of their crowd in the fleshpots of Rome.
This was our first 1st team game at home since early November and Horden Peterlee were the opposition. Johnny Foster picked at 9 with Ross Craig on holiday. Anyway Johnny didn’t recover from a hand injury so Cory Blacklock was called up but he had a family commitment so Scott Cartner
stepped up with veteran lewis carr
coming into the centre! Having been quite mild all week it rained all night to make it rather muddy and these conditions would suit Horden more than us.
They have a knack of turning out some big hefty lads and even though they had a couple of cry offs too they still managed to field a large pack.
So off we went and after 5 minutes Horden Peterlee got a well-deserved try after exerting quite a bit of pressure. 0-5.
5 minutes later Scott Cartner
opted to kick a penalty just inside their half and knocked it over 3-5. The play was pretty even with contrasting styles and after some good pressure in the Horden half a long pass saw Nathan Turner
with not much space squeeze over in the corner. 8-5.
Horden came back at Gateshead but the defence was solid. Just as though it looked like half time was on us a break out of the Gateshead half saw lewis carr
break a tackle and steam into the opposition half with Nathan Turner
in support. A neatly timed pass saw Nathan get is second. 13-8 at half time.
Second half Gateshead got onto the front foot. I was talking to one of the Horden lads and we both said that whoever got the first try in the second half would win it!
Gateshead were attacking and Scott Cartner
was tackled. He went down and twisted to make the ball available. Penalty for not releasing says the ref even though there was no opposition player attempting to get the ball! This was one of many bizarre decisions he made for both sides! Having said that refs don’t make as many mistakes as players do!
They kicked the penalty for touch, won the lineout and kicked the ball deep into the Gateshead half about 10 metres from the Gateshead line. With the excitement of youth Adam & Nathan took a quick throw in but were caught and Horden regained possession and scored. 13-13.
Gateshead battled manfully to move the ball about but the conditions were getting worse and Horden were exerting pressure on the Gateshead scrum. Gateshead won a ball but in the eagerness to get the ball down the line a pass went astray and it was gathered up by the Horden centre who raced away to score. Converted 13-20. A penalty a few minutes later made it 13-23.
Gateshead tried really hard to get the crucial score but Horden’s defence was excellent and the wet conditions made it very difficult. So it finished 13-23. Horden deserved their win and the Horden guy and me were right when we said whoever scores first in the second half will win it.
You can’t afford to gift tries like we did & expect to win.
York next week and we might have a scrum half!!
