ROVERS PLAYED THE CONDITIONS BETTER.
From the selected side Tim Clinton
& James Marshall
were out so in came Ollie O’Connor and when Surrey pulled a muscle in the warm up Charlie Ladds
went to 8, Akar Omar
to the second row and Lewis Lacey to the back row.
I went down with my bro and the conditions were slightly wet to say the least. Well he being a former geography teacher and a fountain of knowledge with all things weather wise speaking he predicted that sunshine was on its way from the south. Well the only thing that came from the south was more agua!
The game starts with a bit forward & a bit back. Scrum just inside our half and under pressure Charlie Ladds
picks up and off on the charge. Makes a good 30 meters and when the ball was recycled it was knocked on out wide.
Scott kicked a penalty to make it 3-0 after 6 minutes. Both sides were making mistakes in the awful conditions but Rovers were getting more of the ball. Gateshead’s tackling was good most of the time but it was getting more & more difficult to hang onto players in the slippery conditions. Rovers should have scored on a couple of occasions but handling errors let them down.
Nevertheless they got a pushover try after 22 minutes to make it 3-5. Scott Cartner
then kicked a couple of penalties to make it 9-5 at half time.
2nd half Rovers picked up their game and scored after 5 minutes to make it 9-10 and again after 10 minutes to make it 9-15.
Gateshead were having a go and looked dangerous on a few occasions but couldn’t finish anything off. Twice we had line outs near the Rovers line and won the ball comfortably only to try and give quick possession but for the ball to be fumbled in the conditions.
Rovers got their 3rd try after 15 minutes and a penalty soon after to make it 9-20. By this time neither team was recognisable and it was still precipitating quite heavily. The Rovers forwards were making big inroads with barging runs with their no 8 to the fore.
The scoring was finished by Rovers when there was a forward pass, a knock on then a really bent line out to rub salt into the wounds to make the final score 9-27. However Gateshead can’t complain at the score as it should have really been more.
Can’t fault the effort of the Gateshead lads but the conditions didn’t suit our lads at all. On a good note we again had a load of lads who have come through the youth system and it would have been invaluable experience.
South Shields Westoe on Wednesday night at 6.30pm at Wood Terrace. Let’s get there & support the lads.
