BONUS POINT WIN
Came through in the end.
Guisborough at home and a fine day for a change. Pitch still wet mind but dried out considerably from the previous day.
Moslemi at hooker and Clinton in at prop. Nathan Turner
back on the wing. Well Gateshead started the game and got into the Guisborough half and would virtually stay there for the first 35 minutes. The scrum was solid, lineouts not so. A few chances went begging with either a poor pass or good tackling by their defence. After 19 minutes some good support saw David Tate
score again for a good try. This time it was only 10 metres! Converted by Scott 7-0.
Gateshead continued to be on top but it felt a little flat. Guisborough got into the Gateshead half for the last five minutes of the half and nearly scored. Half time 7-0.
Guisborough to kick off the second half. The Gateshead forwards were for some reason about 10 meters back from the 10 metre line so it meant that they were about the same distance from the 10 metre line as they were but the would get a run at it. Sure enough it was a good kick just over the line and they won it, recycled and scored. 7-7!
Thankfully Gateshead responded well and a mazy run from David Tate
saw Matty Cooper in support and took the pass and scuttled in from about 40 metres for his first try for the first team. Well done.
For the next 20 minutes or so the game was played in the Gateshead half but good defence kept them out. Matty Copper was off with a knock on the neck and Akar Omar
followed him with a twisted ankle. On came John Kelley and Skiddy with skipper Heelbeck going into the back row.
Gateshead scrum on their 22 saw good ball shipped across the pitch with Conner Anderson
scoring in the corner. Scott Cartner
knocked over the conversion from the touch line. 21-7.
Finally the bonus point try was scored by Nathan Turner
who stepped inside with Scott converting again to make the final score 28-7.
It sounds a bit churlish to complain about a bonus point win but it was a bit flat. However it is hard to play two games in a week with the first being against a really strong side. We should have been out of sight by half time but thankfully we didn’t let them take advantage of that to win comfortably in the end.
The forwards scrummaged well and all tackled well. Gosforth away on Wednesday at the moment 6.30pm ko.
