YOUNGSTERS SHOW THE WAY.
So last game of the season at home v Consett. They needed to win with a bonus point to win the league and get promoted. Our league position was safe. We had a full team of unavailabilities for varying reasons. So we ended up with seven lads from this or last years youth section playing. All we could ask is that they try their hardest and get stuck in.
Consett brought the whole of the town with them to support their winning league bid or least it felt like that and why not?
So the pressure was on and Consett wasted no time in putting the pressure on Gateshead. However the Gateshead lads got stuck in tackled their hearts out with Adam Ridley, Ross Craig & Lewie Arthur to the fore with ‘old man’ Scott Cartner aiding and abetting and even older David Tate too!
The forwards got stuck in against a much bigger pack. Gateshead had a couple of attacks and from one Scott Cartner got injured and had to go off. So Corey Blacklock went onto the wing with Conner Anderson at full back. Drew Carr was battling manfully at getting the ball away from the back of the scrum with flankers Matty Cooper & Scott Wilczek putting themselves about.
Pressure would tell and Consett scored tries up to half time to make it 0-25. Gateshead nearly scored but Lewie Arthur was stopped just short. Robbie Greenwell was on for Tom McGowan.
Ollie O’Connor came on for Johnny Thandi and did well in the scrum. Consett got another three tries but the Gateshead lads never gave up and nearly scored. After a good break by Thomas Skidmore where he shrugged off several tackles Adam Ridley grubbered through and won the race for the try line to score a well deserved try.
I think the relief at getting the blank off the scoreboard made Gateshead relax a bit too much and Consett got another couple at the end to make the final score 5-61.
So congratulations to Consett who thoroughly deserved their win and promotion. The Consett players did not take the mickey either and didn’t gloat at the Gateshead players but naturally were well pleased with themselves and celebrated big style and quite rightly so!
So our youngsters were given a hard time but they did not shirk at anything and gave their all. Adam Ridley, Ross Craig & Lewie Arthur tackled themselves to a standstill against much bigger opponents. Young forwards Matty Cooper, Akar Omar, Ollie O’Connor & Scott Wilczek put in a lot of hard graft and it was great to see Robbie Greenwell back and it was hard to believe that he has hardly played any rugby this season as he got stuck in and looked the part as a first team flanker!
The rest of the lads also got stuck in with David Tate showing his class again. I just hope the camera was kind to him this week!!
So with the number of young lads coming through the future looks good but they and all the senior players must get stuck in during the summer. On availability. It would appear that players now seem to have time off from playing for other than injury so here is a plea from an old ex player. Try your best to have a good look at the fixture list and plan your social life and holidays around it. I know it is not always possible but please try?
So all the best to Consett and we wish them luck in North East One. I think they know it is a hard league but I wish them well. There is one thing however I will not miss about playing Consett and it is not going up there. I worked up in Consett for 2 years so I have no problems going there. I will not miss one of the most obnoxious, horrible people I have ever come across in my rugby life. North East One you are welcome to him!
So that’s it for another season . We have the small matter of th
