Average Age 22.22 recurring!

I hope Paddy doesn't mind me treading on his toes.
A quick synopsis Acklam vs Gateshead. There was a large contingent of lads under 20 on the pitch yesterday and a number who hadn't played 1st team rugby. 2 lads still only 17!
But from the kick off the young lads along with the older players, who didn't swan off on Paul L's 4th birthday bash, got stuck in. They needed to as Acklam wanted to prove a point after a 90 points drubbing at Durham last week. Acklam ran some great lines and soon we were 17-0 down. Some handling errors and wayward passes put Gateshead under pressure time after time. We managed to pull back one try but we went into half time 24-5 down. To be fair it didn't reflect the effort the seasoned players and the young guns put in. Some fierce tackling let the Acklam players know it wasn't going to be that easy.
2nd half we had the wind behind ,so the thought on the sideline that would benefit us. Again we put ourselves under pressure a few missed tackles and a handy Acklam winger put Gateshead on the back foot. Gateshead managed to score another try which lifted the spirits of the supporters. The Acklam supporters were a bit vociferous one even getting a red card from the ref. To be fair I thought the Yorkshire ref had a decent game, missed some infringements on both sides but he cant see everything on the pitch. All credit to the players they attacked and defended like proverbial lions but the opposition managed to score a number of tries to make the final score 48-10. Try scorers Bentham and Race.
I know the coaching staff were a bit exasperated by certain phases, kicks, moves and missed tackles but to be fair it was a case of a large contingent of young players with a few seasoned heads. Some players were playing out of position but still played to the best of their ability and to be fair didn't look out of place in defence and attack.
Not the best result but I think given what I watched yesterday the future is very bright for GRFC. Congratulations and well done to Luke Austin
, Ben Wade
, Alfie Middleton
and Rob Fish on their 1st team debuts. And again thanks to the older seasoned players for guiding the younger players on the day After the match Harry, Coops and myself totted( well Harry did on his calculator) the ages and took an average, the average age was 22.222222. Give these guys a few more years and we will reap the benefit of bringing players through the youth section.
Finally a big thanks to the Acklam committee who couldn't have been more accommodating to the visiting supporters. They offered drinks before the game and even put on a small buffet in their committee room. A far cry from the 'welcome' we received at Whitby a few weeks earlier. I hope we reciprocate the welcome on the return leg.
