Phil Smith announces Squad

Glasgow Hawks players receive Scotland call up

Two Glasgow Hawks forwards, Steven Findlay and Tommy Spinks have been called into the Scotland squad for the two “Club International” fixtures in February.

Heriot’s Head Coach, Phil Smith, will be in charge the SRU announced today.
Smith will be assisted by Hawick’s Gordon Henderson who will fulfil the role of assistant coach, while Heriot’s Jamie Parker comes in as skills coach.

Smith said: “I hope the Scotland Club XV can show off our domestic game in 2015.
I’m delighted to be handed this chance. Being given the opportunity to coach this team is a reward for me and I hope it is the same for the players.”
The side will play two fixtures in February 2015. The first will be against Ireland Club International, followed by a match against English Counties for the first time. The final dates for these matches are to be confirmed.
For both Steven and Tommy it is their first time being selected for the Club International squad. 13 of the 28 selected are new to the squad.
They are Steven Findlay (Glasgow Hawks), Shawn Muir (Hawick), Nick Beavon (Melrose), Russell Anderson (Gala), Russell Nimmo (Heriot’s), Tommy Spinks (Glasgow Hawks / Glasgow Warriors), Peter Eccles (Melrose), Sam Pecqueur (Edinburgh Accies), Harry Boisseau (Heriot’s), Scott McLeod (Hawick), Liam Steele (Heriot’s), Rory Hutton (Hawick), Gregor McNeish and Graham Wilson (both Heriot’s).
Smith continued: “With limited sessions I don’t want to spend time looking at big numbers of players and who’s the better than who, I want to focus on helping the group gel and forming relationships.
“I want to make the most of the time we have together and to see them start working together.
“The group I have selected have been performing well all season and this is their reward, a chance to play for their country.”
For Steven it will be seen as just reward for a number of seasons of prodigious effort in Hawks colours since coming to Old Anniesland from Dalziel. In the run up to last season’s cup final Steven had said on BBC Alba that being chosen as the Premier 3 Player of the Season had been a big honour, however Phil Smith’s selection is a bigger measure of the respect other teams hold this pugnacious prop.
Tommy’s selection caps off a month which has seen him turn out in the pro-ranks for the Ospreys in South Wales and the prospect of pulling on the Silver Thistle will mark another milestone for the back row forward.
Hawks President Chas Afuakwah, welcomed the news, “Hawks always seek to give players the opportunity to show off their talent and it’s great for the boys to get this recognition. Steven took a big step when he came here from Dalziel, where he had played since he was a boy and it’s great to see him getting this recognition for his efforts.”
