Battling welfare in late, late win.

A bad day at the office" was how Glasshoughton Weelfare joint manager described last Saturdy's opening league loss at East Yorkshire Carnegie.

Well last night it was certainly, A better night at the office as a much better performing welfare came back to win 3-2 with all 3 of their goals coming in the last 11 minutes.

Welfare showed little respect towards the visitors for this game and tore into them from virtually the first whistle.

It would be fair to say that the home team could, and should have been possibly 4 goals up at the half-time break but they were thwarted time and again by the superb goalkeeping of debutant Harrison Foulkes. Remember the name because this lad could have a big future.

The 17 year old stopper is a trainee at Hull City and has been loaned to Carnegie. After his performance he will be amazed to be on the losing side.

The game began after a sombre minutes silence in respect of Lucille Rollinson, the mother of welfare player Connor Rollinson Lucille lost her battle with cancer prior to the game.

In the first few minutes Phil Winn just got onto the end of a Ryan Ferguson cross as Andy Horbury threatened. Horbury then had a great chance when one on one with Foulkes but his tame shot was easily saved. The welfare the shot on the turn and Foulkes saved with his legs. The keeper then made a great stop at the foot of the post from Rob Oldham before the being tested by a Jack Knight shot.

The desperate visiting defence then hacked the ball onto a post before Oldham had probably the best chance when volleying at goal from 7 yards out with Foulkes again blocking the ball.

After all the chances for welfare they went behind to a penalty just before the break when Horbury pushed a Carnegie player in the area. Ryan Williams just about beat Matt Zaniewski into the bottom corner.

There was still time for Horbury to equalise but with only Foulkes to beat he headed wide.

Carnegie came out with a little more purpose for the second half and Zaniewski was a little busier between his posts.

Welfare came close again on 62 minutes when a low drive from Oldham beat Foulkes but struck the far post.

It looked as though the home side were going to rue their missed chances with 15 minutes left when Carnegie broke away. Zaniewski managed to half block Daniel Walker's with a smother at his feet but the ball bounced up and he guided into the net.

That seemed that but welfare were handed a lifeline 4 minutes later when Oldham drilled a penalty home after Matt Wilshire was chopped down.

Walker shot wide then for the visitors, but then determination by Jack Knight saw welfare level. Out on the right the young man, who had caused problems for Carnegie with his dribbling and quick feet, beat 2 men before putting a low cross into the 6 yard area where Tom Carr glanced a header home.

Welfare were going for the winner but again Foulkes saved with his feet and then he sprang to his left to palm an Oldham shot just wide of his left post.

Welfare won the game in injury time when another tremendous ball over the top of the visiting defence was latched onto by Oldham who glided it underneath Foulkes.

After the game Lee Vigars said, "With 15 to go it felt like we were facing our second defeat within the space of 4 days but the character and determination of the lads turned the contest on its head and 2 minutes int injury time we won the game. Should have been out of site at the break and that was evident when they got the penalty. There was no panic at the break. The lads were told to continue in the same vein and be patient but we were caught out again against the run of play. Everyone in the ground that that was it. Rob Oldham strikes home the penalty and Tom has glanced home the header from a stunning Jack Knight cross. The another tremendous ball from Jack find Rob again and he controls and hits home. The boys are buzzing now for the Blyth game in the FA Cup",
