A review of the 2016/17 season

                                              A REVIEW OF THE SEASON
                                                         GARRY MOLLON
                                                       MATCH REPORTER

It seems such a long time since the season began on Saturday 6th of August last year when we began the season under new managers Darren and Lee Vigars with an unlucky defeat at possible title winners Hall Road Rangers.

The disappointment of that result was soon forgotten as we went on a fourteen game run when a narrow defeat at home to Grimsby Borough was the only league loss and we were unlucky to lose in a penalty shoot out at Hemsworth M.W. in an FA Vase replay. Our league form in that period suggested that we could possibly be play-off contenders.

Opposing goalkeepers have been a thorn in our side at times this season. Indeed the Grimsby goalkeeper had a worldy in the mentioned loss, as did Pete Lawrie in the Selby Town home draw, and also the Worsborough keeper, again in the home draw.

Eight drawn games have cost us points this season especially  when late equalisers have seen us get only a single point. A couple of the worst were at Nostell  when we were leading 2 - 0 in the last two minutes and conceded two. Then a few weeks ago at Selby when they equalised with the last kick of the game.

In the second half of the season results have been mixed and we  moved between 8th and 10th position in the league several times. There were poor performances especially at Rossington Town and Worsborough.  We were hoping to finish in the top half of the league to get into an FA Cup place but those hopes were dashed with the defeats at Ollerton and the home game against Eccleshill.

We will now finish In 11th position which is of course a much improved from last season.

In the cup competitions we lost at the first round stage of the county cup at Farsley Celtic, and as mentioned previously mentioned, we were  unfortunate be beaten by Hemsworth in the FA Vase.

In the league cup we eventually got to the semi-final stage after being re-instated when Harrogate Railway had played an ineligible in a previous round. After a fantastic quarter final win at Hallam hopes were high for an appearance in the Bramall Lane final. The hopes were dashed last Tuesday night in the semi-final at Penistone when despite a spirited second half performance, we were beaten 3 - 2.

Players have been and gone this season. Rich Collier was a big loss. Injuries have also hit hard especially in the past few weeks when we have lost Andy McManus, Ryan Poskitt, and Ash Scothern.

A lot of players have chipped in with goals with main scorers prior to today's final game, being Nathan Keightley with 23,  Ryan Poskitt 12, Adam Hayton 10, and Andy Horbury, and Conor Glavin with 9 each.

So the season is over. There have been highs and lows. Missed chances and individual mistakes have cost us but we have seen some good games.

Congratulations to Darren and Lee. They have done an excellent job in improving our league position this season.

To all of our supporters. A big THANK YOU for your continued support this season and we hope to see you next season.

Have a good summer all.

Regards

Garry
