New Mills v Glossop North End
Glossop North End beat New Mills 3-2 in an entertaining friendly, which
could have seen either team emerge victorious.
The game’s first goal came after just 4 minutes with New Mills going 1-0 up from
a corner. North End’s number 9 Darrhyl Mason found the back of the net from a
tight angle just before half time to put the scores level at the break.
Mason continued the second half as he ended the first, as he put Glossop 2-1 up
after an hour. New Mills didn’t give up and they equalised shortly after. The
winner was to come just 4 minutes from time as Mason sealed his hat-trick to
win the game for the away side.
On a cool summer’s evening, it was the home side that started the game on top.
A New Mills attacker found himself through on goal but a North End trialist did
enough to divert the strikers shot out for a corner.
However, from the resulting corner, a New Mills defender found himself
unmarked as he powered a header down towards the ground, past Russell
The Millers continued to threaten from set pieces and often managed to get in
behind the North End defence but were often wasteful.
Glossop struggled to create chances and it took 25 minutes for their first shot.
Mason managed to find a trialist at the back post but his volley went inches wide.
Immediately after, New Mills were able to enter North End’s penalty area with
their number 7 squaring the ball to a team mate who looked destined to score
yet Saunders made a super stop to deny the forward.
After 30 minutes, there was a lengthy stoppage due to a nasty tackle on captain
Matt Russell. The defender was unfortunately taken off.
Glossop levelled shortly before the break through their number nine Mason. The
striker found himself in a tight angle towards the left-hand side of the penalty
area yet drilled a low shot, which went through several bodies and eventually
past the New Mills keeper.
Moments before the referee ended the half, Mason was taken down in the
penalty area off the ball yet the referee was not watching and did not award
what looked to be a clear penalty.
New Mills started the second half similarly to the first half as they created
chances almost immediately.
Their number 7 outpaced a North End trialist to then find himself with so much
time in the penalty area. He opted to pass rather than shoot but his fellow team
mate massively over hit his shot.
New Mills number 7 again was involved in their next chance. After gliding past 2
North End defenders, all he had to do was beat Saunders but the keeper again
made another fantastic stop.
It was now Glossop’s turn to apply some pressure. A nice flowing passing move
ended with a trialist cutting inside before firing a shot towards goal, which was
The game became very end to end with both teams searching for a second goal. A
frantic couple of minutes saw a New Mills attacker fire wide from a low cross and
then at the other end, Mason was again brought down in the box with the ref
The penalty appeal did not matter though as Mason picked himself back up to
confidently stride through the New Mills defence, calmly slotting the ball past the
keeper, putting North End ahead for the first time after an hour.
10 minutes later and North End defender Josh Lowe was unable to control a
loose ball towards him, which enabled a New Mills attacker to capitalise, the

players before being blocked on the line by a defender.
A North End trialist was caught in possession in his own half but the New Mills
attacker for the third time could not convert his one on one chance. This was a
let-off for North End who were to then score the winner.
A trialist was hacked down in the penalty area which gave Mason the chance to
score his hat-trick and Glossop’s third. Mason’s penalty was saved but he scored
the rebound making it 3-2 to Glossop in the 86th minute.
That brought an evenly matched game to an end with the final score New Mills 2-
3 Glossop North End.
