Hillmen fall out of FA Cup

Glossop North End's defeat to City of Liverpool meant the end of the road for the Hillmen in this years FA Cup.

After a hard fought draw away at City of Liverpool, the Hillmen came home to Surrey Street to face the Merseyside boys again in an FA Cup Replay.

The teams served up a thriller for the fans, who were entertained for the entire duration of the game. It was almost like a home fixture for COLFC as they had an impressive following from their fans who made their presence known throughout the game.

There were tensions between the two sides as the game kicked off however, neither side were afraid of attacking. Glossop started off brightly and drew first blood in the game after just 15 minutes. Danny Pemberton played a defence splitting through ball which was met by who other than Darrhyl Mason. He was one on one with the keeper, kept a cool head and slotted the ball to the keeper’s left to give Glossop the lead.

Glossop did not enjoy their lead for very long as just two minutes later, COLFC equalised. John McGrath brought down a lobbed through ball and shot across goal from the right hand side past Russell Saunders. COLFC had got themselves back into the game and I believe that is what they call a swift reply...

City of Liverpool looked to capitalise now, Jack Hazelhurst attempted to lob Russell Saunders but he smothered the ball well. They also whipped in a dangerous free kick which would have been a sure goal if one of their players got a touch on the ball. It ran through for a goal kick.

Ultimately if would be Glossop who would grab the next goal and would take the lead for the second time in the game on the 29 minute mark. The goal was almost identical to the first, the only difference being, this time Mason played the ball through and Pemberton was the one who provided the finish. Great link up play from Glossop’s No. 9 and 10.

COLFC seemed to thrive when they went behind, both times in the half they upped their game rather than dropping their heads. Peterson thought he was sure to grab an equaliser after Andy Bishop’s miss-kicked clearance but was flagged offside. They put lots of low crosses into the penalty area which were well cleared by Glossop’s defence, often by full backs Adam Cooper and Will Beesley who had standout performances today.

COLFC’s constant attacking threat proved too much for Glossop who were pegged back for the second time 5 minutes before the break. This time it would be Jack Hazelhurst to score. He gathered the ball on the left handside, went on a great run into the box with a couple of step overs before cutting onto his right foot and bending a shot into the corner of the goal.

A thrilling first half left us with an even 2-2 scoreline at half time.

The second half had a lot to live up to after the dazzling first half displays from both teams. However, both played tentatively and although enjoying good spells of possession, were not able to fashion a good chance.

City of Liverpool had the first good chance of the half after 65 minutes. A low driven cross fell to the feet of McEllin who somehow missed the target when it was easier to score. Pemberton had an equally good chance at the other end minutes later as COLFC failed to clear a corner but he failed to keep the shot down from 4 yards.

Glossop seemed to be running out of ideas as the full time whistle was fast approaching. COLFC had some golden chances at the death, the best being a delightful lofted pass to the right hand side which was taken down by McGrath who looked sure to steal it but Glossop’s trusty man between the sticks made an incredible save to deny the goal.

Full time, 2-2. We were to be treated to an extra half an hour in this FA Cup Replay.

Before the fans had chance to reposition themselves the ball was in the back of the net. If you blinked you’d have missed it. Less than a minute after the restart, COLFC had taken the lead for the first time in the game courtesy of substitute David Forbes. Glossop failed to clear from a set piece, Forbes stole the ball and smashed home to be the hero on the night and break Hillmen hearts.

Glossop fought back with all they had, lots of long ball forward which were often not capitalised on. In the dying moments and against the run of play, City of Liverpool looked sure to seal the game when substitute Karl Clair tried to take the ball round Russell Saunders but he dived down well to squander the chance.

A valiant comeback effort from the boys in blue was not good enough on the night. Nonetheless a solid performance which manager Mark Canning can be proud of.
