Bish, Bash, Bosh!
A physical match against a Springhead team, fresh from the Land of Giants film set, saw Glossop edged out in an end to end thriller.
Team : Logan Booth, Louie Meates, Jacob Donnelly (c), Jake Pearson, Dylan Johnston, Liam Boardman, Thomas Kuczaj, Thomas Brogden, Mackenzie Lomas, Jack Cowan.
Right, where to start, firstly, I am nursing a decent hangover after last nights superb comedy night, if you missed it, you really missed out. Fantastic organisation and the comedians were very good. Lets hope the powers that be think its worth doing again and get more of you u-12s miseries there with a smile on your fizzogs!
The game, in hindsight was a good one in the usual bogbath conditions we have become accustomed to at Astley, as we always seem to be on last, the four games before us obviously having an effect, we were slightly under strength in that Noah was unfit to play but did come down to watch and offer support.
Springhead adapted first and started strongly, waves of attacks testing the back three with Booth pushing one onto the bar and Lomas forced to play almost as a sweeper as the yonners ( anyone from near Oldham will recognise that nickname ) pushed us back and after fifteen minutes they went ahead after a bit of a scramble which we failed to clear.
After this we woke up, Donnelly and Meates were really strong at the back whenever Springhead attacked again and we began to get some joy as the lads started to knock the ball around the giant at the back ( he was about 5'10, no kidding! ) and as a consequence the Springhead defenders stepped up the physical stuff and we were finally given a free kick about twenty yards out.
Up stepped Pearson to smash in the equaliser and we were in the game, Springhead were rattled and we really started to turn the screw.
A Brogden free-kick after yet another foul was parried by the keeper and Cowan nipped in to head in the goal which gave us a deserved lead.
The old cliché about half-time coming at the wrong time, was true here, we were dominant and unlucky not to have a third as a Cowan goal was ruled off-side ( coach Rowlinson was seen clasping his head with his huge hands in despair ) which looked a little close to us in The Swamp!
The half time show included more McDonalds based humour aimed at this scribe as JR Lomas took a break from bleating on about oil based issues to stick the knife in regarding a certain Ronald McDonald photograph taken at Cologne airport, with a rare appearance from his fellow New Miller side-kick Johnston, I certainly felt intimidated and will probably need more therapy.
The second half was in general a poor one from The Blues point of view, Springhead hit us on the break constantly as most of their attacks seemed to come from our own attacking play, we seemed to struggle to retain the ball and the giant on the left wing ( he was at least 6'0, no kidding! ) strode enormously down the line causing a lot of trouble.
A second controversial incident was a fierce but fare tackle by giant number 1 on Brogden which left him down injured with the ball out of play, the match was allowed to go on with no throw in given and Springhead scored with the Glossop lads looking on, despair for the fans but that's the way it goes, I'm not criticising the Ref, thought he was pretty good, but if kids are hurt I thought the game should stop.
A Brogden goal was also ruled off-side and now the Blues began to look tired, Johnston and Boardman battled hard in the trenches and Kuczaj, never gave up even though this wasn't the kind of pitch for his pace and dribbling.
Springhead broke again as we seemed to give up and even though a goal mouth scramble saw the ball hit the post, we couldn't get back into it and the game was up.
Lomas, in the second half was great when he came back on, getting stuck in and dealing well with the physical stuff being dished out, then, an innocuous looking kick caught him on the ankle and he went down and didn't get up, he was carried off and was taken to hospital where fortunately he had no broken bones and will now have to rest as he joins the sick list!
With Ron Manager Kuczaj not present ( rumours were he was doing a charity carwash in his GNE G-string ) the MOMs were decided between coaches Rowlinson and Pearson with their decisions being Logan Booth and Jacob Donnelly.
And so we squelched off, talking in detail about the resurgence of Leeds United and other stuff !!!
