The Gloucestershire Warriors have appointed 18-year-old Gloucestershire University student Matthew Robinson as their head coach for the 2016 season.

We look to give players the opportunity to play and develop their skills in the game. This season we are also giving this opportunity to a coach
- Chris Wilson, Club Chairman

The Warriors, who will be playing in the West of England League next season, have hailed the appointment as ground-breaking:
“As a rugby league club in Gloucestershire we look to give players the opportunity to play and develop their skills in the game. This season we are also giving this opportunity to a coach,” said chairman Chris Wilson.

“Matthew comes to us with an extensive CV of coaching junior teams in Yorkshire in both rugby league and football. We had a number of discussions and his enthusiasm and ideas shone through.”

Robinson, who used to play for the Sheffield Eagles is studying sports development at the University and is really looking forward to starting work: “I am really pleased to be given this opportunity. I am ambitious for a successful career in coaching and this is an ideal start,” he said.

Despite moving down a division, The Warriors will be continuing their partnership with the All Golds and, according to Wilson, will form a key stone in the player pathway. “We have retained the link with the All Golds which, if anything is stronger in terms of the player pathway, he said. “With the All Golds running a team in Conference League South, there is, for the first time a clear development stepping stone through from novice to professional.”

Several of last season’s Warriors squad that played in the Conference League South including captain Connor Jones and hooker Luke Stephens and have earned places in the All Golds first team squad and Wilson is certain they are not the only ones capable of making the step up.

"The Gloucestershire region is packed with rugby talent. Connor and Luke are simply the tip of the iceberg. They have the talent and desire to succeed in rugby league and no doubt there are opportunities for others to follow."
