With the weather taking a wintry turn, it seems natural to look forward to the summer months and this is precisely what Gloucestershire Warriors’ chairman Colin Moverley is doing.
“We are incredibly proud of our achievements last year,” said Moverley. “But we are looking forward now to this summer and aiming to build on them”.
The Warriors are looking to build on a record-breaking 2011 campaign that saw them lift the West of England division title and reach the national semi finals in a summer that saw them lose only once.
There are plans to run two teams this summer with the first team making a return to the Midlands Premier division and a second string seeking back to back glory for the club in the West of England.
“We have ambitious plans but for them to succeed, we need players. We are looking to recruit as large a squad as possible to cover for the inevitable injuries and unavailability”.
The Warriors are also delighted that a number of last year’s squad are continuing their outstanding form with the University of Gloucestershire All Golds side in the BUCS Super 8 competition.
Moverley believes that there are plenty of talented young players who could make their mark in the game in the county and are calling on them to give rugby league a go.
“The game is crying out for talent,” said Moverley, “and professional clubs are increasingly looking our way. The county is a hotbed of rugby ability not just in the union code. There are plenty of lads out there who are quite capable of earning a stab at the pro game”.
With Super League champions Leeds Rhinos as a development partner the Warriors have links right to the very top of the game.
Coach Steve Lee agrees “It’s going to be a very important summer and I’m really looking forward to it.
"This new season offers up a new challenge, not only in stepping up a league, but digging out more fresh talent from the huge pool in the county who would like to not only put themselves in the shop window for a host of top rugby league clubs but also highlight their qualities to the top rugby union clubs in the area”.
The Warriors will once again play at Old Richians’ Sandyleaze ground and their season begins in late April, running through until September.
“There is an opportunity for everyone this year and I'm proud to be a small part of this great club," added Lee who can be contacted on 07947 653096 by any player interested in trying rugby league this summer.
