It’s derby time again for the Gloucestershire Warriors as they take on Pool 2 leaders Cheltenham Phoenix at Gordon League RFC this Saturday (2.30pm)

The game is part of the first Magic weekend of the season where teams from Pool 1 take on teams from Pool 2 in a series of games where local rivalries are played out.

The Warriors will take on the men from Cheltenham for the first time in their guise as the Phoenix having played them four times under their former Old Pats RL identity.

Cheltenham won the last three of those games, the last being a narrow 28-20 thriller at Old Centralians in 2014, though the Warriors recovered to win the title at the end of the season.

Having lost to the Bristol Sonics last weekend, the Warriors will be looking to make amends in what is their first home league game of the season. Their one win so far this season comes from a walkover against Portsmouth Seahawks and Chairman Chris Wilson is looking forward to the match.

“The Phoenix have been doing well this season and it will be a tough test for us this weekend,” he said. “We were disappointed with the way things went last week. Though we played some good stuff in the last quarter, the result had long since been decided.

“We need to start well, get our noses in front and get some confidence into our play. Then we’ll see how we go.”

The Phoenix will be favourites for the two points having lost just one of their five games this season in an impressive start to the season.

They top their Pool and are second to Bristol Sonics in the composite table as they look to repeat their title-winning debut season in 2013.

The Warriors will be desperate to get a win on the board, which should make for an exciting game.
