Shaw-Peake x1

Wanderers made 4 changes. Out went Jessica Smith, Jen MIcklewright, Sam Lindop and Holly Fowell due to injury in the warm-up and in came Natalie Scott, Chelsey Berwick, Ashleigh Grimes and Katie Sawyer.

Wanderers made a slow start to the game which saw Abbey have the first few opportunities which Goalkeeper Rachel Lightfoot found very comfortable and when tested stood strong to make a string of good saves. Down the other end Wingers Tara Harrison and Katie Sawyer were causing the Abbey's full-backs no end of problems and when the ball fell to Ellison's feet she could only find her attempt going straight at the keeper. After 36 minutes Ashleigh Grimes was withdrawn and replaced by ever present midfielder Sam Lindop which enabled Beth Caddy to move into a more attacking role.

At the start of the second half Wanderers started to get on top and were pushing for that illusive first goal and nine minutes into the second half a cross from Tara Harrison went all the way across to Katie Sawyer who unleashed one from just inside the 18 yard box which was her first for the club and Wanderers first of the afternoon. From the restart Goldenhill were looking for more and only had to wait 3 minutes before one turned into two as a mix up at the back helped Sam Lindop tuck home from 10 yards and ensured Wanderers doubled their lead. In the 72nd minute a ball over the top from Abbey Hulton meant Defender Danni Windsor was chasing after a ball when she was caught by the Abbey winger. Windsor was unable to carry on after this foul as she now has suspected ligament damage and everyone at the club wish her a speedy recovery. Windsor was replaced by Ashleigh Grimes who went back into midfield and saw Beth Caddy revert to left back. 3 minutes later another late challenge this time on Holly Ellison resulted in a free kick to Wanderers and a yellow card for the Abbey Captain. 10 minutes from time the game was killed off when Top scorer Holly Ellison escaped the Abbey Hulton defence to make it 3-0 and ensure that Wanderers would be playing Burton in the league cup semi-final. Late changes saw Natalie Scott and goal scorer Sam Lindop be replaced by Laura Hardy and Joanne Embury.

After the game Manager Nathan Ball said "First half we didn't really get going and were second best to a lot of things, we sat them down at half time and gave them a different game plan second half which if you look at the first 15 minutes of the second half worked a treat. We didn't hit top level today but were grateful for the 3 goals and the win that takes us into the semi-finals of the league cup."
