Greens Take Over the Manor
Gorleston progressed to the first qualifying round of the FA Cup for the third time in the last seven seasons.
Ricci Butler was without Connor Ingram so Jack Garrod started and Elliott Hannant was preferred to Jay Turner.
With a strong cross wind and a bumpy pitch making conditions difficult, Gorleston settled quickest.
Joel Watts had a good early chance and there was a shout for a Greens penalty after Garrod appeared to be pushed from behind before Southends Daniel Okah had their first shot, which was straight at Taurean Molloy.
Molloy came to his side's rescue when Bayley Newell was free in front of goal but the Greens keeper managed to claw away the effort.
The Southend keeper, Klinton Makayabo, had to be alert to parry away a Watts shot before Southends Alfie Lindfield dragged a shot wide of the far post at the other end after a square run across the box.
The half ended with Connor Deeks carrying the ball out of defence before sliding Watts through but again the keeper was equal to the effort.
The Greens had had the better of the first half but fell behind three minutes into the second...from their own free kick.
Kyle Ingram's cross went straight into the keepers arms. He launched it quickly forward to Newell who lifted it over the advancing Molloy. Elliott Hannant got back to hook off the line but Michael Hopkins was following up to knock it in.
Gorleston equalised ten minutes later. This time Ingram's free kick from a similar position was met at the near post by Garrod who flicked the ball through the keeper's legs.
Four minutes after that the Greens were in front.
Garrods run into the box was ended by a trip and the ref pointed to the spot. Deeks made no mistake with the penalty.
Southend sub Daryl Cooper came on and immediately dragged a shot wide.
The hosts chances appeared to be over in the 75th minute when Lindfield was shown a straight red card after lashing out at Luke Goreham.
However, with three minutes remaining, Okah equalised with an acrobatic overhead kick. There was slight confusion as the linesman had flagged for offside but, after a quick chat, the referee gave the goal.
With the game looking to be heading for a Tuesday night replay, Gorleston pushed forward.
Ingram's deep free kick was picked up on the byline by Jay Turner. He drilled the ball hard and low across the face of goal where Garrod arrived with a diving header at the near post to net the winner.
