Greens Pay the Penalty
Gorleston's new boss Stewart Larter didn't get off to the start he wanted as his side went out of the Senior Cup to a side who play two divisions lower.
Larter's first line up of his reign showed three changes from the draw with Walsham le Willows in the previous match. Taurean Molloy was suspended, Peter Lambert away and there was no place for Jason Thompson. In came Charlie Hitch and Ismael Fatadjo, with Sam Freestone replacing Molloy in goal for his debut.
Freestone had to be alert early on when a 4th minute cross from the right deflected off Daniel Foreman at close range and the keeper reacted well but it was Gorleston who should have got their noses in front early on.
Mitch McKay picked the ball up on the left following a free kick in the 6th minute. He moved in on goal, drilling the ball goalwards but Mulbarton keeper Tommy Wright got the faintest of touches to divert the ball onto the bar.
Three minutes later Connor Ingram broke through behind the defence but the keeper was equal to his effort.
However, it was the hosts who took the lead in the 18th minute when a corner from the left found the head of Eliot Altay and he powered it home.
The first half continued with Mulbarton on top, Danny Self still controlling the midfield, but it was scrappy and Gorleston were struggling to get going.
Three minutes into the second half Wanderers doubled their lead. A deep cross from the right by Self found John Curtis unmarked and he stooped to head in off the underside of the bar.
Larter then brought on Jack Garrod for Isaac Burrage and, within a minute with his first touch, he had got the Greens back into the match.
Fatadjo did superbly on the right to put a superb cross in from wide on the byline and it was Garrod who met it at the back post to nod it in.
Ben Thompson got between defenders but shot high over Freestone's goal then Fatadjo sidefooted wide from a Garrod pull back.
Mitch McKay did have the ball in the net just after the hour mark but it was ruled out as Connor Ingram had strayed offside before making the flick on.
Three minutes later it was Mulbarton's turn to be upset when they bundled the ball home from a corner but the referee had spotted a foul so disallowed it.
Gorleston equalised in the 68th minute. A cross from the right was laid back to McKay by Fatadjo. McKay drilled in a low shot which the keeper could only parry back out into the centre of goal where Connor Ingram followed up first to knock the ball in.
The Greens probably should have won the game two minutes before the end of normal time. A great Fatadjo turn on the right left his marker for dead. He slid the ball across to Garrod, centrally, who had more time than he realised. He took it first time when he had time for a touch and his sidefoot went wide.
The match then moved into extra time with boths teams tiring. Mulbarton went more direct and Garrod picked up a yellow card and was maybe a little fortunate not to pick up a second one for a couple of other misdemeanours.
Mulbarton had their first on target effort, other than the goals, four minutes into the second period of extra time, but the shot was straight at Freestone.
Connor Ingram then had a great chance with five minutes left but scuffed the shot wide so the match moved on to penalties.
Both teams scored their first spot kicks but then Connor Ingram's clipped the outside of the post and went wide and McKays was blazed over the bar with Mulbarton both tucking theirs away.
They needed to score their next to win but Freestone prolonged the shoot out saving from Daegan Watts with his feet.
Garrod finished his to make Mulbarton kick again and, this time, Hayden Gibbons found the net to send his side into the third round.
