Gosforth 42-5 Hartlepool Rovers
Gosforth welcomed in the new year at Broadway West with an emphatic 6 tries to 1 win over Hartlepool Rovers.
An early Mark Anderson
penalty set the home side on their way and after 5 minutes the first try was scored when Kieron Locke
broke through the Rovers’ back line and handed on to Liam Hawthorn
who won the race to the line. There was almost another try for Gosforth when a line out was won just outside the visitors’ 22 and a huge rolling maul took play to the goal line but Rovers held out. Eventually a second try did come when a sliced kick by Rovers found skipper Andy Black
who set off down the right wing. He was tackled close to the line but Ollie Stephenson was on hand to pick up and score. Anderson’s conversion made it 15-0. Minutes later a rampant Gosforth scored again when Matty Marshall took a quick penalty and fed Locke who in turn popped it up to Darren Kelly
to score. 22-0 courtesy of Anderson’s conversion.
As half-time approached, Gosforth made sure of a 4-try bonus point. The ball went through a number of phases and hands before the second rows combined as Dan Tucker
passed to Gus Miller who straightened and touched down to take the score to 27-0.
Rovers started the second half strongly but the home defence kept them at bay. Gosforth counter-attacked and Anderson attempted a drop goal which missed but the ref was playing advantage and the fly-half made amends by kicking the penalty. 30-0. After 15 minutes of mainly scrappy play and a lot of handling errors on a cold afternoon, a strong run by flanker, Aidan McCall-Hagan saw him combine with fellow debutant Chris Voss who set up Matty Struthers to score a 5th try. 35-0.
As the game went into the last quarter, Darren Kelly
was yellow carded and Rovers took advantage of the extra man by scoring a try after much pressure on the Gosforth line. The conversion failed and the score was 35-5. Gosforth weren’t finished however and, restored to a full complement, a cross kick from Anderson found McCall-Hagan who crossed and Anderson’s conversion took the final score to 42-5.
