Outplayed by Westoe
craic: It was very fitting that a pre-match minute's silence was observed by all in attendance in memory of a young Westoe lad and our own Peter Skevington, who had played for both Clubs in the 70's.
match: On a bitterly cold but sunny day at South Shields Westoe (the game had been switched a while ago, as Westoe's ground would be occupied by cricketers later), this catch-up game saw the powerfully strong home team kick off with the strong breeze at their backs. Within two minutes Westoe had breached the Gosforth defence to go 7-0 up. Unfortunately, the decimated visitors had to endure a non-stop barrage of hard running and skillful handling resulting in the half-time score being 71-0 nil. To their credit GRFC never gave up trying and showed tremendous spirit throughout and the only 17 registered players available were mercilessly put to the sword! The final score was 123-0 - our heaviest ever defeat. Unfortunately, modern stress put on the players by having to play such a mismatch, because of League regulations, is the way of things these days. Even the wordsmith Skevs would have had difficulty paying justice to the lads, who turned out on the day mainly to avoid being docked five league points!!
Next week sees us back at Broadway West against Gateshead. Hopefully the same spirit will be in evidence, whoever plays in the Green and White.
