Spirit almost wins the day.
Two points gained!
A very chilly Saturday in Gateshead was warmed up by an extremely encouraging performance by the Phoenix. Having struggled to turn out a full side so far this season, Alan Scott managed to get 18 lads to travel to play against Gateshead III. Unfortunately, the hosts got off to a very strong start with three unanswered tries in the first half to lead 24-0 after 30 minutes. Two of their tries came from unfortunate errors by the Phoenix, whilst attacking the home line. However, we didn't give up hope and continued to attack until, on the stroke of half-time, James Heffernan
finished off a fine move to score our first try. The half-time score was 24-5. The second half saw a transformation from the visitors with three more tries being scored following some very committed rugby. A flowing movement upfield was well finished off by Ross Martinscroft
, converted by Jon Shinner
in the 46th minute. Despite several near misses we didn't score the third try until the 74th minute - this time by replacement, Kieron Locke
. Dan Slater
's attempted conversion just drifted wide. There was till time for Marc Burton
to charge over in the 79th minute to bring the score to 24-22. The clock finally beat us and that was the final score, giving us two well-earned bonus points. Let's hope that this is a springboard for the rest of the season.
