Quite a friendly!
A good workout for the lads.
At almost the last minute the Phoenix were able to turn out at Ponteland, as that Club celebrated 50 years to the day of their first ever game. Alan Scott managed to muster 19 players to play with several new lads making their debuts and a few older stagers slipping on the green and white again. The hosts were due to play Blaydon Development, who cried off mid-week, whilst their 3rd XV were due to play a Winlaton side as part of the 50th celebrations, who also cried of on the Saturday. It looked as if the celebrations were going to fall flat, but, typically, GRFC helped them by agreeing to play Pont's 2s in the first half and their 3s in the second! The result was of secondary importance, but was reckoned to be 29-15 to Pont. We did, however, win the second-half with three well-taken tries by Matthew Gaynor, James Weaver
and Richard Gavin
! It was a good lung developer for the lads and a good return to the field of play by some of our long-term injured.
