The Starch met their old rivals Penclawdd under lights last Friday in a tough local derby where the spoils deservedly went to the visitors.
The Starch were slow out of the blocks and a strong running Penclawdd XV hit the seconds hard in the opening ten minutes building up an impressive 15 -0 lead. To their credit the Starch dug deep and playing into driving rain tightened up when in possession and began to pressurize the visitors goaline. A series of scrums eventually turned to a penalty try and a half time scoreline of 7-15.
As in the first half Penclawdd struck quickly with a fine try out wide before J. Simeonides cut the deficit with a well taken penalty. Good use of the boot saw Gowerton edge the territorial battle in the third quarter and second row M. Dennis scored a try with a powerful surge. However, it was not to be Gowerton's night as the young visitors, displaying great handling skills despite the conditions, scored two tries in the final 15 minutes to complete the double over the Starch.
Whilst the result will go down as a loss it was a huge step forward from when the two sides last played each other and both can take plenty of positives from the encounter.
