Goytre v Caerau

Another nerve shredding afternoon for all involved with Goytre FC.

Goytre travelled to Caerau on Saturday for their third outing in Division 2 with high hopes of continuing their excellent run of 18 wins and 1 draw from their last 19 games. On the back of a solid 1-0 away win & performance on Tuesday night at Aberbargoed Buds, Goytre were hopeful of another 3 points against Caerau who lost 4-0 in their previous fixture against Briton Ferry Llansawel who Goytre had dispatched 5-3 in the first game of the season.
Goytre started well on a difficult surface with long grass and heavy conditions hampering their normal free flowing style. Overcoming this, the away side played some great football in the first 20 mins and it seemed a question of when not if Goytre would open the scoring. Some great link up play between Kyle Bassett and Luke Prosser nearly opened the scoring with Bassett’s shot being well saved by the Caerau keeper. Luke Prosser then had a goal struck off harshly for offside. The first goal of the game was scored by Caerau on 30mins after a scuffed shot from outside the box caught the Goytre backline flat footed and resulted in a simple tap in for the Caerau winger who had cut in from the flank and gambled on the ball across the box. The Goytre defence was breached again on 40 mins after some good play by the Caerau right winger who showed some good strength and pace to burst into the area and delicately lob the ball over Scott James as he came out to narrow the angle.

Half Time – Caerau 2 – 0 Goytre

Even though Goytre found themselves 2-0 down at Half time there was a sense of calm in most of the away supporters confident that the advantage of playing down the slope second half combined with the Goytre attacking options would see the side get back into the game during the second period. Goytre did get back into the game through Luke Prosser after he was dragged down in the box and calmly dispatched the resulting penalty. Caerau hit back almost immediately to restore their 2 goal cushion after some good work again by the Caerau winger down the left hand side who cut the ball back for a simple finish. Goytre stepped up the pressure and 2 goals from Luke Prosser including a classy headed finish saw the away side deservedly draw level. Goytre then took the lead after another penalty was won and dispatched by Luke Prosser taking him to 4 goals for the game. Goytre then had to defend bravely for the last 10 minutes of the game as Caerau pushed forward for an equaliser and deservedly held out for all 3 points. Some great performances on the day including Luke Prosser who scored all 4 goals and Calum Miles who worked incredibly hard in the centre of the park constantly harassing the Caerau midfield.

Full Time – Caerau 3 – 4 Goytre
