Culverhouse leads first training session

4 months ago By Andy Sutton

New Grantham manager Ian Culverhouse led his first training session on Tuesday night at The Meres.

You could be forgiven for expecting a poor turn out on Tuesday evening as 7pm approached and England kicked off their World Cup tie with Colombia, new Grantham manager Ian Culverhouse had other ideas.

But as the Gingerbreads new boss, Culverhouse put 17 players through their paces on a warm but breezy evening at The Meres. Just hours after over 2000 kids had left the stadium following their Summer games, a squad with many still in their teens worked for 2 hours on fitness and movement ahead of Friday's 'fitness friendly' with Melton Town.

Familiar faces in attendance included Michael Hollingsworth, Oli Luto, Ryley Thompson, Jack McGovern, Kev Bastos, Tom Curtis, Brett Callow who all made first team appearances last season. Whilst Tom Batchelor attended, however was ruled out through injury. The numbers also included a couple who appeared in last seasons Under 21's squad. Whilst none have yet signed Evo Stik forms for the club, it would be unfair to name any of them until they have done so.

Culverhouse remarked "Whilst it was a very young turnout this evening, that is what my squad will be built around. I believe in having an experienced spine of the team, with energetic and hungry youngsters around them. Pre-season is all about getting players ready for the start of the new season, and the games between now and then will allow us to look at plenty of players to see what works and what doesn't. The lads will be back in training again on Thursday, before a workout at Melton Town on Friday, ahead of the County Cup tie on Monday at Stamford. We have a few players unavailable at the minute, but we are working hard to assemble the squad for the new season."
