Gingerbreads Reach Play Off Final
The Gingerbreads set up a play-off final at Ashton United with a comprehensive second half demolition of Warrington Town.
After a tight first 45 minutes, Warrington had no answer to Grantham’s relentless pressure.
Chances were at a premium in the first half as both defences put in solid shifts. Kieron Preston was not troubled by the home forwards and it was only late in the first half that Grantham got a clear sight of goal.
A through ball a minute before the break sent Lee Shaw one on one with the Warrington Town goalkeeper. An extra touch from the Gingerbreads top scorer allowed the home goalkeeper to recover his ground and gather Shaw’s shot. Right on the cusp of half time, William Hayhurst almost broke through for Warrington, but a great tackle from Olly Luto denied him a shooting chance.
It took Grantham 15 minutes of the second half to break down the home side. Andy Wright’s shot took a deflection and sat up in the air. Skipper Stefan Galinski showed great determination to beat Warrington goalkeeper Luke Pilling to the ball and head Grantham in front.
The opening goal sparked a flurry of action. Solid defending by the Gingerbreads blocked a series of efforts by the home side before a wild shot flew well wide. Warrington forced the first corner of the game before the Gingerbreads stretched their lead.
On 70 minutes Grantham broke quickly and won a free kick 30 yards out. The delivery came to Danny Meadows at the far post. His shot into the ground looped over the Warrington goalkeeper to make it 2-0 to Grantham.
With Warrington chasing the game, chances began to come for the Gingerbreads. Shaw got clear of the home defence on the Grantham right with six minutes remaining. He cut in and shot, but only hit Pilling’s legs.
A minute later Grantham sealed the game. Olly Luto’s cross was only half cleared by the home defence. From 20 yards out Jordan Hempenstall placed his header over the Warrington goalkeeper to seal the win with the home side unable to make any impression on a resilient Grantham defence.
