Gary Alexander joins Borough from Burton Albion - stepping down from League Two to the Southern Counties East League

In a major coup the club has secured the services of Gary Alexander.

Greenwich Borough FC is delighted to announce the signing of Gary Alexander following his release by Burton Albion after playing seven matches for them in League Two during the second half of last season. It is a tremendous coup for a club playing at Step 5 to be able to attract such an experienced player from the Football League.

Gary was born in Lambeth and started his career at Premier League side West Ham United before going on loan to Exeter City for the 1999-2000 season. He scored 16 goals in 37 league matches for the Grecians, winning their Player of the Season award in the process. As a result Swindon Town paid West Ham a £300,000 transfer fee to take him to the County Ground. His spell at Swindon only lasted one season with Gary scoring seven goals in 43 appearances in all competitions. In June 2001, with Swindon in financial difficulties, Gary moved on to Hull City. He scored 20 goals for the Tigers in 47 matches during the 2001-2 season picking up the Hull City Player of Season award.

In January 2003 he moved back to London, signing for Leyton Orient. He was a first team regular with the Orient until he rejected a new deal in May 2007. During his time at Brisbane Road Gary made 179 appearances scoring 52 goals.

Gary then moved on to Millwall where he played 91 times scoring 21 goals. In May 2009 he scored twice for the Lions in the League One Play-off final giving Millwall a 2-1 half-time lead but Scunthorpe came back in the second half to run out 3-2 winners.

In August 2010 Gary moved on to Griffin Park spending two seasons playing for Brentford where he scored 21 goals in 62 matches. In March 2012 he went on loan to Crawley Town scoring seven goals in fourteen games during their successful run-in as Crawley finished 3rd in League Two thus winning promotion. He then signed permanently for Crawley. When Ritchie Barker was sacked on 28 November 2013 Gary became the interim manager alongside Martin Hinshelwood, the club’s chief scout.

Gary also had a loan spell at AFC Wimbledon from 31 January 2013 to the end of that season. During that time he scored three goals in 18 appearances including the first goal in the match on the final day of the season against Fleetwood Town. The Don’s won 2-1 that day to preserve their Football League status. After the loan spell he returned to Crawley and made 26 further appearances for the Sussex club scoring 5 goals before he moved to Burton Albion at the end of the January 2014 transfer window. Gary played seven times for Burton before being released at the end of the season.

The club are delighted to have signed a player with such a pedigree.

Unfortunately the attempt to sign Edgar Davids has not been as successful, but other signings are expected to be made in the near future.
