Honours even at Keighley Albion

At the beginning of the season Keighley came to Greetland and proved too hot to handle, outscoring the Allrounders by 13. Today was a day to marvel at the progress of this young team, at how far they’ve come in such a short space of time under the masterful stewardship of Coach Seal.

Keighley set out strongly and were met by a defiant defence. Big tackles and a well organised line kept them out. Quick out of the line, determined and committed, Greetland had a point to prove. When it was time to attack, they continued with the same attitude, Noah breaking free and going over in the corner for the first score of the game.

But Greetland didn’t have it all their own way. Two quick fire tries from Keighley left the Allrounders bewildered, but Noah hit back again with another strong run and his second try of the game. Joe added to the tally with a neat solo effort, following up his own grubber, before Issy danced round a confused Keighley defence to touch down in the corner. Despite all their endeavours, however, Greetland went in at half time trailing.

Obviously inspired by Roy Hodgson’s half time team talk for England against Wales, Coach Seal organised his team and pointed out what needed to be out right. It worked! Greetland held out Keighley for four sets following some great defensive work from Will, Joe and Maddie, amongst others. They followed this up with five outstanding tries. First Ellis showed his blistering pace down the wing to disorientate the defenders, then Lil showed of her skills to step a few challenges before offloading to Jack who outpaced the defence to run home from 60 yards. Lil had a hand in the next, again off-loading to Joe to cross the whitewash before he went on another mazy run to go over for his hat trick. Maddie got herself on the scoresheet, bullying her way across the line from close range.
Despite these heroic efforts, and a resolute defence, they couldn’t stop Albion from going over for two late, late tries and earn themselves a draw in the dying minutes.

This was another great performance to be proud of – every player putting their bodies on the line for their team mates. At this rate of progress, the Allrounders will be unstoppable in the next couple of weeks.
