GRESFORD ATHLETIC A BRIEF HISTORY

The history of the present day Gresford Athletic football club stretches back to 1946 although it is known that the club existed in the 1920's.

The club remained in the Welsh National (Wrexham Area) League until the introduction of the Cymru Alliance League in season 1990-91 when they became one of the founder members of the League. They remained in the Cymru Alliance League for four seasons before being relegated back to the Welsh National League, during this four-year period they reached the League Cup final losing to a very strong Rhyl side at Newi Cefn Druids.

They became Champions of the Welsh National Premier League in season 1995-96 but due to financial difficulties could not meet the ground criteria for promotion back to the Cymru Alliance. The following season a new committee formed with the intention of taking the club back into the Cymru Alliance. This was achieved in season 2000-01 when they were once again Champions of the Welsh National Premier League and with the finances in place the committee managed to upgrade Clapper Lane to Cymru Alliance standards, in the same season they were also beaten finalist’s in the Welsh Trophy.

Upon the re-structure of football in Wales they re-entered the Welsh National Premier League in season 2010/11 following 9 seasons in the Cymru Alliance League and whilst the season proved a difficult one we move into 2011/12 with a strong desire to deliver as manager Sam Ainge goes into his fourth year in office and continues to bring new faces into the Club focused on building a squad that in time will be capable of taking the Club back into the next level of Welsh football.

Our Reserve’s have also had their share of success in the past and maintained a good standard in the Welsh National League. Last season proved a difficult one coming up against strong sides in the Reserves League however a young side managed enough to retain their place in the league and move into 2011/12 with Alan Seward in charge having stepped up from youth football and looking to work with a mixture of youth and experience who are eager to take up the challenge’s laid down before them in an ever strengthening Reserves League.
