The Knaresborough edition finally hits the website

SATURDAY 5TH APRIL 2014
MANSE LANE
TOOLSTATION NORTHERN COUNTIES EAST LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
KNARESBOROUGH TOWN v GRIMSBY BOROUGH

Well this is it our final away game of the 2013/2014 season and it sees us on another long journey as we head over to Knaresborough. To celebrate the last game we have decided to give the fun bus a rest and Vice Chair Pete takes the honour of carrying the chair.

It’s bright and breezy as we depart Grimsby for the trip that takes up the A1 into West Yorkshire. The journey is really uneventful and Pete who wanted to take it steady is in Knaresborough in near record time.

On arrival we are greeted at the gate by a club official who directs us to park in the ground where disabled parking is ‘readily available. It/s even decided that if the weather does turn then I would be able to watch from the car.

Dan removed my chair from the car and we headed to the bar. There was a slope into the clubhouse and the room was large and with Sky TV. We were offered a drink on arrival which was much appreciated. Dan did the honours while Pete went off to show our passes and also purchase the programmes.

The snack bar was situated within the clubhouse and we had soon got our hands on sausage rolls and I was in my element again as it was the type made from flaky pastry. Yes once again I looked like my chair and trousers ate more than I did. The range of food was good and very reasonably priced.

We were soon joined by a good few members of the Blue Army and a warm welcome was given to Chris from Doncaster (Only wrote that to annoy him he is from Grimsby really). Chris being the good diabetic took advantage of the pie, peas and gravy just to check out his suger levels and by the way he woofed it down it would, like the sausage roll, have been most satisfying.

The club shop was also in the bar area and a small range of souveniers was available even if no fuss was made of any of them in the bar area.

The disabled toilet was situated at the end of the corridor adjacent to the bar and was easy to use. The light switch was situated outside and could have done with a sign but fortunately I had people there who are more observant than I.

We went out to look for the disabled area which was not obviously visible and we noticed that another wheelchair was positioned near the dugouts. This we assumed was the area set aside for chairs so we took up a position next to the away Dugout.

The view was good with only a small fence in the way, this made the view acceptable for all. The ground is only three sided and there is no access to behind the goal at the far end of the ground.. There is a stand behind one goal and a seating area that is covered opposite the dugouts..

The game kicked off as rain started to fall making the surface very slick. It was Borough that seemed to get into their stride first, banishing a lot of the blues they suffered on their last outing. With Borough in the accendancy it was no real shock when from a corner neatly taken by Lewis Wilson the goalie fumbled the ball and the net welcomed a goal for Borough. This sent the Blue Army wild with delight and Chris was able to burn of a few kilos of suger with his goal celebration. As half time approached it was Knaresborough that were looking the more dejected side as Burough continued to push for that second goal.

Half time hospitality was in a cabin situated across a gravel path and unfortunately had a couple of steps to get in. Dan did the honours and I was soon eating some nice butties and a slice of flapjack. Accompanied by a warming cup of coffee. A Knaresborough official kept apologising for me not being able to get in and persisted on offering me more cake and sandwiches, which I of great willpower managed to refuse. The diabetic inside though took advantage and ate a couple of extra flapjacks on my behalf.

The second half started badly for Borough and our vice chair because the game was 1-1 before he made it back to his place. The match degenerated a little as the half wore on and it was a disappointment to all the Blue Army when Borough went 2-1 down. To their credit though they never gave up the fight and came close on a couple of occasions to levelling it. But sadly the last away fixture of the season saw Borough beaten again.

It was back into the bar after the game and friendly conversations with the locals until finally we pulled Pete away and were able to make the start of our journey home.

I would like to say it was uneventful, which it was, until Pete drifted into a dream about Jayne just passing Scunthorpe and the shock of the swerve woke us all up and from there on I chatted away with pete to keep him awake.

So the season has ended as far as away games go and it has been a pleasure to do these reports. So for the final time this season it’s.......
