A GAME OF TWO HALVES
Battling Borough go down
YORKSHIRE AMATEUR 5-3 GRIMSBY BOROUGH
After the dramatic departure of Paul Walden this long trip to West Yorkshire was always going to be a tough ask for the Wilderness Boys.
With Scott Drury returning in goal and brother Adam debuting up front it was the visitors that made the most of the early running.but on 5 minutes a clearance from the Yorkshire defense found Joel Hughes just inside the Borough half and from fully forty yards Hughes chipped Drury to give the hosts the lead.
Borough responded well with Debnam and Drury causing all kinds of problems for the home side and on 25 Drury beat the keeper to equalise.
Now Borough were really up for it and on 36 minutes a fine finish from Drury saw the Wilderness Boys go ahead.
The game was flowing from one end to the other and vahances were being created but both goalies were on fine form.
Half time came with Borough 2-1 up and unfortunate not to have claimed a couple more.
The second half started the same as the first with Borough looking sharp but a half time substitute for Yorkshire soon put Borough on the back foot
On 55 Shaw equalised with a 25 yard screamer and from then on Borough seemed to struggle with the pacey Amateur attack.
On 65 slack defending saw Blakey get the first of his brace. At 3-2 down Borough began to get back in the game and only a couple of great saves denied Borough.
With the game entering its last phase Yorkshire netted a fourth through Blakey.
Borough weren't finished yet though and Luke Fanthorpe finished well after strong approach work from the visitors.
As the four minutes of injury time were signalled Borough threw everything at the hosts and a last minute free kick to Borough saw the ball pumped forward and despite a push in the back on the Borough forward the ball was cleared up field and with the Borough defense stretched Hughes had an easy tap in to seal victory for the hosts.
This was a great effort from the Wilderness Boys and in a game of two halves their effort was outstanding. Credit must go to Dan Barrett and Andy Liddle for sorting the team out at short notice and as they commented after there was enough on display to give encouragement for the rrst of the season.
Borough return to action when AFC Mansfield visit the Bradley FDC on Saturday.
