Leeds Carnegie 0 v 2 Grimsby Borough
H/T 0-0
Att 29
Grimsby bounced back from two defeats to down University side leeds Carnegie 2-0 in their own backyard.
Against a team who train full-time, Borough had to scrap for long periods, but unlike their opponents they took their chances when they came.
The pitch,at the home of Farsley Celtic, was immaculate and Borough elected for a 4-5-1 formation in an attempt to stifle an energetic Carnegie side and attempt to hit them on the break.
Carnegie pressed and probed from the start and dominated possession, however Borough kept a good shape and broke up play in the last third, with Oswin, Rockhill and Mascall doing the spadework. On the half hour mark the Carnegie keeper, Jacob Giles, made a terrible mistake in trying to take a quick goal kick, the kick went straight to Mascall who should have scored but somehow managed to pull his shot wide of the upright. Chances were few and far between but Stephenson latched onto a long ball from Liam Tuck and held off Walsh before attempting to chip Giles, unfortunately he didn't get any height on the ball and Giles claimed the ball at the second attempt. in the 40th minute Stephenson again looked certain to break the deadlock but Giles managed to block the shot on the line from point blank range. With the half drawing to a close the Grimsby back for of Tuck, Greetham, Unsworth and Toyne had managed to keep their shape and discipline and through this the Leeds side had not managed a shot on target.
Half Time... Leeds Carnegie 0 v 0 Grimsby Borough
The second half started as the first with Carnegie pressing but against the run of play Borough opened the scoring in the 54th minute after some good possession in the last third Stephenson picked out Luke Mascall on a forward run and as Giles came out Mascall coolly slotted the ball in to the far corner of the net. Carnegie's heads appeared to drop as Borough upped the pace and on 66 minutes they doubled their lead
Ricky Creer latched on to the ball in the box and with no hesitation he fired the ball into the far corner leaving Giles well beaten. Borough made two quick substitutions with Nick Brown replacing a tired looking Olly Howard and Tommi Wright coming on for Antony Rochill and this was enough to see them through the last ten minutes.
