Grimsby Borough's visitors this afternoon were Eccleshill United from the Bradford area for this important Northern Counties East Division One game.

Borough languishing third from bottom and Eccleshill second bottom it was a must win game for both sides.
Borough were struggling in terms of personnel with only eleven fit players available. However from the kick off Borough started brightly and took the game to the opposition with some decent passing moves, Eccleshill looked a little off the pace as Borough pushed forward with Lewis Buckthorpe and John Davy winning most things in midfield and finding Lee Stephenson and Dean Newby who were having a constant battle with Doogan and Bell, some poor decisions by the referee going the visitors way. On 20 minutes Borough should have been one up, Luke Fanthorpe found an unmarked Stephenson in the box but somehow the striker missed his kick with only Aaron Brian in the visitors goal to beat. Eccleshill took a surprise lead on 25 minutes when the back four were waiting for an off side flag that never came and Andy Lee went through and gave Leigh Graves no chance with a good finish. Worst was to come for Borough as the referee decided to give Tom Heaton a straight red card for something he said to the linesman, again we have a referee spoiling a game when a simple word in the ear would be good enough, it seems to be a thing with referees now that they all respond to knee jerk reactions were a little commonsense would be more effective. Borough were certainly up against now and on 38 minutes Eccleshill got their second when Declan Corby couldn't believe the time and space he was given to beat Graves from 18 yards. So from a positive start Borough were 2 down and with only 10 men on the pitch. Borough went out in the second half with a 4-3-2 formation it was going to be hard work from the off if they were going to get back into the game. Things were looking positively brighter with the 10 men working their socks off and pressing back the visitors for long periods, Stephenson got in the box and cut inside his man to fire a good shot across Brian who managed to just finger tip it away for a corner. Little was seen of the Eccleshill attack as Borough pushed forward, Hutchinson had a speculative shot from 25 yards, but went well wide, things were happening and Brian had to scramble to the foot of his post to keep out a Buckthorpe shot with Newby looking to force home the rebound. Draper got Stephenson going and the striker turned full back Cannan and whipped a cross to the far post were Fanthorpe should have done better, but a slight hesitation allowed Price to clear the danger. A disappointing result for Borough, but yet again a game spoiled by some inadequate refereeing. So three league games left and a League Cup Semi Final, Borough have allot to do to salvage something from a tough season. Next game is at Bottesford Town on tuesday evening 7-45ko.
