‘RE-ENGAGED’ RAIDERS WELCOME BACK TRIO
LUKE SAYER and Doug Horrocks return to the Raiders side for the trip to Sidcup, weather permitting this Saturday.
Both have been rested in recent weeks in order to clear up knocks, but they are named in a powerful starting XV which also has Layton Batiste back in the front row as Charlie Currie takes a rest of his own.
The other significant news is that Robin Le Cocq travels on the bench and will now be available for all away games after arranging cover on the farm.
Previously, since returning to the Raiders fold after a spell away from the game, Le Cocq had only been able to make home games, but his full commitment is a major boost to the squad as a whole.
Meanwhile, our coach has been speaking about how the Dorking loss has given the whole squad a kick in the backside and refreshed the mindset.
'The Dorking defeat was what we needed – we were probably getting ahead of ourselves a bit.
'But we've re-engaged with what we are trying to do and the lads are really excited about this match,' said the coach who has announced a strong team and bench.’
Re the personnel for Saturday, Reynolds revealed that Ned Brown will miss the first of three games on the bounce as he takes exams, but Jason Batiste is available for all those games and is a fine replacement.
And with Charlie Currie nursing a rib strain, there will be two Batistes in the starting XV, with Layton returning to the front row after missing a couple of games due to a dead leg.
Luke Sayer also returns on the wing in this starting XV:
Sam Steventon, Tom Ceillam, Layton Batiste, Nick Merrien, Lewis Hillier, Dan Hill, Dale Martin, Doug Horrocks; Malcolm Barnes, Owen Thomas, Anthony Armstrong, Jason Batiste, Luke Jones, Luke Sayer, Same Whitehead.
Replacements: Cameron Craine, Robin Le Cocq and Kyle Brown.
NO RANG FOR STILL CHEERFUL LADIES
THERE is nothing wrong with the spirit among the Guernsey Ladies despite a run of three straight losses in Championship Two South-West.
In fact, coach Chris Griffiths reckons the side is getting better by the week, despite a couple of one-sided scorelines going against them.
'There is definitely a hunger there for getting on the pitch and trying to get the first win of the season,' he said ahead of a game against their fellow strugglers.
Teddington have also found the going hard this season and lost three, so naturally Griffiths sees a chance of a first win this weekend.
'They will obviously be looking at this game the same way as we are, hoping that they can get their first win under their belts but we will be doing everything we can to ensure that doesn’t happen,' he said.
'We have been looking at new attacking systems the last couple of weeks at training and hopefully we can use these to help turn our fortunes around.
‘We have a strong looking back line, though we will be missing Vicki Rang this weekend, and the forwards are slightly changed with Ellie Whittles unavailable.
'I know that with every game we have played this season we have improved, individually and as a squad and as long as we keep improving then our fortunes are very likely to change for the good.
'I believe if the players can keep their belief in their abilities and play with the same intensity that they mustered against Reading Abbey two weeks ago that we have every chance of bringing back a much needed win.'
Squad:
Andrea Harris, Sophie O'Connell, Heidi Mahy, Kristine Vavere, Sarah Woodington, Tanya Scholtz, Fiona Power, Rachel Merrien, Jemma Crouse (captain), Fiona Ashworth, Aimee Gaudion, Hannah Guilbert, Justeen Baker, Lael Hollingworth, Chelsie Blondel.
Replacements: Fiona Drape, Janelly Le Maitre and Roxanne Richards.
VIKINGS AT HOME
ST JACQUES Vikings welcome Newick to the KGV this Saturday, as they go in search of their third consecutive victory.
The black and yellows have had a fairly good start to the season, winning three and losing once so far.
However Newick look likely to be the strongest team they have faced this season, with a reportedly very strong forward pack and big centres for the Vikings to contend with.
The visitors go into the game in third whilst Vikings are fourth, but have a game in hand over all those above them.
Vikings start with a new-look young back row with John Le Noury and Tom Rihoy starting after impressive performances this season, alongside Leon Gardner who will take over responsibility for calling the lineout in Jonny Laws’ absence.
Callum Murdoch is off Island this weekend and he is replaced by Hugh Birley and with Gardner taking his place at no 8, James Mroch is reinstated to the hooker position.
Jacob Smith, the younger of the Smith brothers, or the brothers of construction as they are known amongst their teammates is also unavailable this weekend. The versatile Brad Webb comes into to replace him.
Regular scrum half Ben Holland also misses out after suffering concussion picked up in the Guernsey Colts recent win over Jersey Colts at Footes Lane, so Taylor Quate starts at 9.
Callum Gladstone, Johan Greenberg and Connor Sullivan continue in the centres and at fullback respectively whilst Leon Collenette returns after missing the Midhurst game with Guernsey Colts commitments, this week playing on the right wing.
The match at the KGV kicks off at 1.30 on Saturday.
Team:
Hugh Birley, James Mroch, Alan Myers, Mitchell Smith, Brad Webb, John Le Noury, Tom Rihoy, Leon Gardner (Capt); Taylor Quate, Alec Bailey, Cashel Cahill, Callum Gladstone, Johan Greenberg, Leon Collenette, Connor Sullivan.
Replacements: Nico Ashplant, Luke Rigby and Billy Wickham
