B's cause a storm at Esher
Esher U13 ’A’ 0 Guildford U13 ‘B’ 22
Guildford U13 B squad finished the season in style last Sunday in an away fixture against Esher, who are currently leaders in the Surrey Youth League 4.
Guildford, who are third in the league, knew that Esher wanted to end the season in style since they had chosen their first-team pitch for this epic encounter. So the stage was set lots of support for both sides from the terraces and two local teams who enjoy their rugby.
Charlie Graham forwards coach for the G’s brief the boys on how tough the match was going to be given the size of the Esher pack and the fact that the squad had not lost a match all season conceding only 28 points in the previous six matches.
Although the Guildford pack was small in comparison they knew that whoever got the breakdown first had the ability to take control of the game. Having won the toss Guildford kick to Esher and immediately put them under pressure. After some clinical rucking, Tom Pettinger scrumhalf for the G's distributed the ball to the three quarters and Michael Upfold managed to break through Esher's defence to score the first of two tries.
The forwards continue to dominate in the breakdown and after phase of play in Esher's 22 Jonathan Burke, G’s No8, picked the ball off the back of a ruck and went over the line.
Apart from G's excellent rucking the tackle count was exactly where it should be ensuring that Esher rarely got the chance to build up momentum. They came close to scoring the only try of the match in the second half but their wing was stopped in his tracks by full-back Edmund Wynn Griffiths.
G’s forwards continued to work hard with some probing runs from Edward Rodge, Huw Whiteman and George Airey coupled with some excellent tackling by Alex Gadd and Euan Vickery. In the final stages of the match Alfie Dennis was high tackled close to the try line and the penalty led to a full on forward assault.
Esher defended well however the ball had been recycled giving Tom Pettinger the chance to pass to Harry Jany at fly half. As Harry lined up to take on the Esher backline he noticed a defensive gap on the far side of the pitch and with a beautifully placed and timed kick the ball bounced in the air and into the arms of the right-wing Ben Shaw who was over the line for an unopposed try.
Chris Jany, the G’s manager for the day commented “it is days like this that make the coaching staff very proud of their squads because although they were in third place in the league the boys still showed their desire to win and claim victory over a very capable side on their home ground, let's just hope that next season brings us more challenges to rise to.”
