On Sunday 25th June, Guildford RFC took part in the NatWest RugbyForce Event. They were one of four chosen clubs throughout the country to obtain a special visit from an England Legend. Guildford RFC were joined by Red Roses legend Maggie Alphonsi MBE for the Sunday morning’s activities.
The morning consisted of two main activities.
The first activities was held where volunteers throughout the club and local communities were invited to join in general club & ground improvements, included in the list of ‘jobs’ were; removal of posts, cutting of ivy, clearing out the women’s shower block and changing rooms, washing all post protectors and flags, as well as general litter picking.
The second was a ‘Girls Rugby Taster Session’ – this was headed up by Robert Newes-Smith, and the session was run by Maggie. This session was open to all local girls between the ages of 7 & 11 – however they were joined by the Gazelles, some brothers and even Mums joined in the fun! All the attendees were also given t-shirts and a goody bag – which was quickly used as autograph material!
All volunteers were supplied with free flowing teas & coffees, and bacon rolls and sweets were on hand to keep the energy levels up. Throughout the morning there was approximately 40 volunteers to help with the ‘DIY’ activities and approximately 20 girls/boys involved in the Girls Session.
Maggie spent time with all the different groups and activities, not only did she run the Girls Session, she was on hand to help make cups of coffees, pull down ivy and wash post protectors. As she went around all the groups she was able pass on her experiences, from coaching through to playing and was even overheard passing on career advice. Also a lunchtime session was held with the Gazelles and their coaches, and again Maggie was able to pass on any advice and answer any questions they had.
The event was also supported on the day by the RFU including Guildford’s Regional Development Officer and students from Godalming College.
The morning was a great success, there were so many positive responses, and Maggie was a delight to have at the Club – we were very lucky.
Now we look on building on the success of this day in building the Girls & Women’s Rugby at Guildford RFC. If you attended the session, or would like more information about Girls Rugby please contact Rob.
We would like to also take this opportunity to thank Maggie for her time, and to also all the volunteers that helped out on the day.
