Guts & Glory.
As I sit here supping on a cold beer (I’ve been told it’s important to hydrate after a day in the sun), I can’t help but feel a huge amount of pride for Guisborough’s U9 squad.
Today, at the Durham County Cup, summed up Guisborough U9s. We never played our best rugby. We played some good rugby in parts but the hour mini bus journey and the loss of an hour to bloody daylight savings time took its toll, with players struggling to get out of first gear and resulting in a couple of silly mistakes handing back the ball to the opposition. BUT!!! The most impressive thing was the never say die attitude, 100% commitment & determination of all the players. With last ditch try saving tackles & tries being scored on the last play of the game to ensure we went the whole day unbeaten & WINNING the Durham County Plate.
A couple of draws in the pool stages meant we progressed through to the plate and as the players found a bit of rhythm and pattern of plays they started to play some good rugby. The final proved a nail biting affair with it going down to “Golden Try” or if you’re old school “next try wins”. As it happened, GRUFC happened to cross the white wash first and pick up the winner’s trophy.
As I said to the players, today summed up our U9 squad and was a good reflection on ALL the players including the ones that couldn’t make it!!! Months of playing and training ensured that we had the right attitude and spirit to do so well today.
I haven’t mentioned names as the WHOLE squad had an input into today’s result.
Thank you to coaches Gaz and Paul who’s endless patience with the kids has reaped rewards with fantastic results throughout the season. Thank you to the parents who’s unwavering support never fails to impress me and thank you to the players, who have surpassed my expectations on a regular basis. Their sheer guts & determination, passion and enjoyment are attributes that cannot be taught or coached but act as an amazing reflection upon their own personalities.
Well, the beer is going to my head............................or it could be sun stroke, but I’m waffling now and will wrap this up by simply saying “WELL DONE & KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK”.
