Update on wearing of Goggles and base layers for kids in the cold weather

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Extension of Goggles Trial

Please find attached a revised statement on the use of Goggles. The RFU has been running a trial this season although I am not aware of any players from Yorkshire taking part.

A sharp eyed coach recently spotted that the RFU had extended the trial but as they do not appear to have told anyone I assume there have been very few takers but U14s and above can now wear goggles if they get the correct permissions.

I am not clear what process any player wanting to wear goggles will have to go through but with at least one application from Yorkshire in the pipeline we may learn what is required as that application goes through.

With the onset of bad weather and the appearance of frozen players it seem a good time to remind everyone about the Regulations regarding the wearing of base layers and tights/leggings.

Following enquiries from coaches and parents, the RFU can confirm that it is permissible under RFU Regulations for young players up to Under 18, to wear base layer stockings or tights in cold weather, in accordance with IRB Regulation 12.

The regulation states particular thicknesses. However, parents can assume that most current brands will comply, although players are permitted to wear them subject to the assessment of the match referee that the items are safe and pose no risk of injury to the wearer or other participants.

For clarification, track suit bottoms with zips are not suitable.
