The Reds were on the road to face fellow early season strugglers Perthshire with both side looking for a morale boosting win to kick start their respective seasons.

A fine Autumn afternoon greeted both teams and that offered the supports the prospect of some good flowing rugby.

The Scarlets kicked off into the slight breeze and the ball drifted out to hand the home side an early scrum. Haddington set well and destroy the home scrum but a penalty award shortly thereafter allow Perthshire to make ground with a kick to touch into the visitors half. The resulting attack come to nothing but 5 mins later the home side are awarded another penalty. A kick to touch sets up a platform for the ball to be shifted wide and the parting of the red sea allows the home side to run in unchallenged for the opening score on 7 mins which is also converted.

Perthshire 7 Haddington 0

Haddington are looking all out of sorts as the home side dominate territory and ball. On 10 minutes another bout of missed tackles from the Scarlets sees the visitors advance to deep in the Reds 22. Perthshire then win a penalty after a better home scrum and a quick tap is taken and following a couple of phases add their second converted try of the day after just 10 minutes.

Perthshire 14 Haddington 0

This fails to stir the visitors into life and 10 minutes later the home side make ground from deep in their own territory as the Reds woeful tackling continues. The pressure results in a penalty which again is taken quickly to catch the Scarlets off guard and with 20 mins played the home side have their third converted try of the day.

Perthshire 21 Haddington 0

It is no surprise that a couple of minutes short of the half hour mark the home side have secured the bonus point as a series of missed tackles from the Reds allows another all to easy try to be conceded. The conversion is slotted to take the home side into a commanding lead.

The visiting support are envisaging a cricket score but thankfully this fourth try seems at last to stir Haddington to life as tackles start to be made and ball retention and territory improves from the Reds. Keeping a hold of the ball through phases starts to pay dividends. On 35 minutes a good Reds attack is snuffed out as the home side are awarded a scrum, however a great strike against the head by hooker Harrison, see No.8 Paterson pick up and go, feeding scrum half Millar to score in the corner. Bell is just shy with the conversion but some points on the board at last!

The remainder of the half is all Haddington and had right options been taken and ball not kicked away in good positions the almost certainly the deficit would have been further reduced before half time. However it was not to be and Perthshire reached half time with a well deserved lead.

Half Time: Perthshire 28 Haddington 5

Haddington pick up the second half in positive fashion denying the home side a look at the ball and make ground time and time again with good line breaks and ball retention through numerous phases. On 45 mins quick hands puts centre Symington into space and if the final pass had stuck the Reds would have added to their tally but it was not to be. Haddington regroup and when hooker Harrsion takes another strike against the head it sets up a break for flanker Davies and again it is only the final pass that prevents a further try for the Reds. Next up its winger Adams looking dangerous as he sets off on a run through the home ranks, but good scramble defence from the home side keep the line intact.

Eventually on 60 mins the relentless Reds pressure pays off and from a scrum 5, Millar sneeks across on the blindside for his second try. Watt is just of line with the conversion.

Perthshire 28 Haddington 10

On 63 mins Perthshire get their only sniff of points for the past 30 minutes or so with a kickable penalty, but it rebounds from the upright and the Scarlets are able to clear their lines. Haddington manage another half dozen quality line breaks in the remaining quarter of the game but despite that and frequent visits to the home 22, they are unable to add to their tally.

Full Time: Perthshire 28 Haddington 10

The first 30 minutes of this game were from a Haddington perspective as poor as it gets and there can be no excuses for such a dire showing. On the flip side the Reds totally dominated the remaining 50 mins of the game with the hosts never looking likely to add further points other than one penalty chance. Haddington looked a much better team in the second half with a host of line breaks. That these line breaks, territory and ball retention only yielded a single score in the second period will be as much of a concern to the coaches as the dire opening half hour. The Reds need to start coming out the blocks much faster. If they can do that and start to convert their chances the surely the results are not too far away.

The week the Reds face an already must win match at home to Morgan.
