The Mighty 3rd's 46 Dunbar 7
The Mighty 3rds 46 Dunbar 2nds 7
On a Wenceslas type of day, deep and crisp and even, the Mighty 3rds made a welcome return to the vast plains of Neilson.
Strengthened by a few waifs and strays from the 2nds and 1sts they put on a great display of typical 3rds rugby.
There was top notch honest toil and in your face work up front with regulars Pudsy, Leonard (once a season tonight's the night) and the very irregular Glass all outstanding, and some direct running in the backs, where the centre combination of John Deere and Massey Ferguson (Jamesie and Ben) ground forward, had no reverse gear, and were a long way round in defence.
Striving to orchestrate this was new arrival John Monu who must have thought he had arrived on Planet Zob: a lunar landscape and snow for the first time; 35 stone in the centre; jet-lag; and the joy of playing 10 at zero degrees on the end of Willie (Barnes-Wallis) Green Jersey's service. Nevertheless he showed some nice touches with his running and passing, more tackles than Cliff in a season and had a couple of raking diagonals down the slopes which warmed the cockles of this correspondent's heart.
In what was in the end a bit of a tryfest, scorers were Glass, Jamesie, Sax with a great angle, John Monu, Elliot on the end of a great team effort, and Laidlaw, whilst Chomp grabbed two in succession, making the transition from 1st team bench to 3rds water boy with ease, great club man that he is.
The score was harsh for Dunbar who also played some good rugby. Great to see them get a 2nds out regularly after struggling last year, and good to see old friends Fester and Daryl turning out, the former looking a few pounds lighter but that may be the hair(less).
Man of the match: Pudsy pounded, Mo mowed, Snake slithered, Glass gleamed, but Santa comes early to Lenny who could cause a fight in an empty room and showed the buzzbomb freshness of a once a year man.
Paddy Power now taking bets on Dickson for Robinson.
Livingston to help the Government re "shovel ready"
Four from five and league leaders, pressure is on.
